  • No school today, Tuesday, Feb. 8

    Marion County Public Schools are closed today, Tuesday, Feb. 8, because of snowy, slick road conditions.

    According to The Weather Channel, today the high will only read 26 degrees, and tomorrow snow showers will be developing in the afternoon. There is a 40 percent chance of snow tomorrow afternoon. Scattered snow showers are also expected during the evening.

  • Tech center engineer position still on the table

    The Marion County Area Technology Center could soon have an engineer on staff.

    Last week, the Marion County Board of Education was very close to approving the hiring of a temporary engineer for the tech center at a cost of $75,000. But, some unanswered questions regarding where exactly the funding for the position would come from led to the majority of the board voting to table the decision until its Feb. 8 meeting.

  • Smith resigns as superintendent

    What a difference a month and three new school board members make.

    In less than a month's time, the Marion County Board of Education has reached an agreement with Superintendent Donald Smith for his resignation, hired an interim superintendent and has begun the process to hire a new superintendent.

  • Makeup school days

    The Marion County Board of Education recently voted to use Feb. 21, Presidents Day, as a makeup day. So far, 12 days have been missed because of snow, and it's likely more days will be missed before winter is over. Last year, school was out for seven days in February because of snow.

  • Marion County students are recognized

    Eastern Kentucky University recognized 949 graduates at the conclusion of the fall 2010 semester.
    Local students and their degree include:
    • Kessley Amber Baker of Lebanon, a bachelor’s business administration degree cum laude; and
    • Jimmy Arthur Brown of Lebanon, a bachelor degree in sociology.
    The school had 1,124 students earn the president’s list and 2,579 students named to the dean’s list.
