  • Jarboe serves as Citizen Ambassador to Mideast

    Laura Jarboe of Lebanon is among 27 American college students who studied Arabic and lived with local families in the Middle East this summer with SIT Study Abroad, a program of World Learning. The students spent seven weeks in the region on programs designed to teach intensive Arabic language skills and introduce them to critical issues and Middle Eastern culture.

  • School registration begins July 25

    Marion County High School staff has set the following registration dates.
    • Seniors will have registration Monday, July 25, from 4 to 7 p.m.
    • Juniors will have registration Tuesday, July 26, from 4 to 7 p.m.
    • Sophomores will have registration Wednesday, July 27, from 4 to 7 p.m.
    • Freshmen will have registration Thursday, July 28, from 4 to 7 p.m.

  • Local students compete in Skills USA Competition

    The 2010/2011 Marion County Skills USA Organization competed in regional competition at the Elizabethtown Community and Technical College in numerous areas of technical skills. They are pictured with the Technical Drafting Instructor/Skills USA Advisor, Paul Spalding.
    Four students - Maison Young, Lauren Thim, Adam Gardner and Justin Newton - advanced to the state competition.
    At state, Thim placed second in technical math.

  • Student exchange program seeks host families

    ASSE International Student Exchange Programs (ASSE) is seeking local families to host boys and girls between the ages of 15 to 18 from a variety of countries around the world.
    Students come with an enthusiasm to practice their English and experience American culture -- food, sports, shopping and more. They will also share their own culture with host families.
    Host families welcome these students into their family, not as a guest, but as a family member, giving both the students and families a rich cultural experience.

  • Student drug-testing policy approved

    After more than a year of discussion, the Marion County Board of Education approved the student drug-testing policy during its regular monthly meeting Tuesday, July 12.

    And they did so, unanimously, with no discussion.

  • Superintendent's goals for 2011-12

    Superintendent Chuck Hamilton reviewed his 2011-12 goals with the Marion County Board of Education during the board's regular monthly meeting Tuesday, July 12. These goals will be voted on at the August board meeting.

    The goals include: 

    • Conducting regular administrative meetings with two-way communication focused on curriculum and instruction.

  • Tech center project is complete

    Architect George Birk was absent during the board's July 12 meeting but Scott Spalding, transportation and maintenance director for the Marion County Public School System, reported that the Marion County Area Technology Center addition/renovation is now complete.

     He also reported that Melson roofing was awarded the Marion County High School press box roof replacement project. The total estimated cost after architect/engineer fees and contingencies is $25,461.

  • Special education program receives top rating

    Superintendent Hamilton congratulated Debbie Spalding, special education director, for the MCPS Special Education program receiving a top rating from the Division of Learning Services.

     Also, the special education program will be using its $11,115 WHAS Crusade for Children grant funds to purchase 15 iPods, iPod carts, 10 iPads and 10 iPad cases that will be used in the classroom.
