  • Wahl earns Ph.D

     

    Clare Thompson Wahl of Louisville earned a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Louisville May 13, 2011, at a ceremony held at the Yum Center in Louisville. She graduated with honors receiving the Dean’s Citation.
    Wahl, a 1994 graduate of Marion County High School, received her bachelor’s degree from Bellarmine College in 1999 and her master’s degree from Spalding University in 2003. She is the daughter of Jim and Hermine Thompson of Lebanon and is employed at Communicare in Bardstown as a mental health therapist.

  • Local students make dean’s, president’s lists

    Elizabethtown Community and Technical College has announced the names of students who made the dean’s list and the president’s honor list for spring 2011 semester.
    The president’s honor list is awarded to full-time and part-time students who are eligible based on the following criteria: full-time degree-seeking students earning a 4.0 grade point average and successfully completing at least 12 hours of course work for the academic term, excluding developmental courses, are included in the full-time student president’s honor list.

  • Free program that provides boost, inspiration for Appalachian women is now taking applications

    For 24 years, nearly 600 women across Appalachia have been learning they have the strength and courage to finish their education and to build the self-esteem they need to find their potential.   At no cost to them, women who find themselves in transition and are seeking to be inspired and build their confidence are doing just that through the New Opportunity School for Women (NOSW) in Berea.

  • Student drug-testing policy simplified

    The Marion County Board of Education may be making its proposed student drug-testing policy a bit simpler.

    During a special-called meeting July 5, the school board received a revised version of the policy. The board was scheduled to meet again Tuesday, July 12, and the drug-testing policy was on the agenda for that meeting as well.

  • High school dropout rate is improving

    The latest non-academic data released recently shows that the Marion County school district's dropout rate has improved considerably during the past four years.

    According to Assistant Superintendent Taylora Schlosser, who recently shared the non-academic data with the school board, only four students quit school in 2010. That's down from 19 students who dropped out in 2006.

  • High school site-based council meeting July 12

    The Marion County High School Site-Based Decision Making Council has scheduled a special-called meeting at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, in the high school library.

    According to the agenda, the council will be conducting interviews for a special education position and the high school boys basketball coach.

    Assistant Principal Robby Peterson said these are two separate positions, but the council may hire one person if it finds someone who can fill both jobs.
