    Editor's note: This is the first of a series of stories about the Marion County Chamber of Commerce's 2010 Outstanding award winners.

    When Tammy Newton would visit her oncologist, he would often ask her how her kids were doing. Without missing a beat, Tammy would begin talking about the kids in her third grade classroom at West Marion Elementary School. However, her doctor was actually inquiring about her children, not her students.

  • MCHS principal search underway

    The Marion County High School Site-Based Decision Making Council has renewed its search for a principal.

    A notice was posted on the Kentucky Department of Education website Feb. 2. Chris Brady, the interim principal and the chairman of the council, said the notice must be posted for at least 30 days.

    "It will be at least a month or two before anything big happens," he said.

  • Drug testing proposal given another shot

    Shelton Young and Jayne Hogan, members of the Marion County Safe Community Coalition, made a proposal to the Marion County Board of Education in April of last year to begin random student drug testing at Marion County High School. At that time, then-Superintendent Donald Smith said that he would make a recommendation concerning the student drug-testing program at the April 27 board meeting.

    That never happened.

  • 15 days and counting...

    The Marion County Public School System has missed 15 days because of snow, and Mother Nature probably has a few more flurries and flakes up her sleeves before winter is over. Last February, school was out for seven days because of snow.

    The Marion County Board of Education is still uncertain how local schools are going to make up all of the missed days. Using part or all of Spring Break could be an option.

  • The early bird gets the FAFSA worm

    The decision to start college life comes with a lot of challenges - deciding which college to attend, choosing a field of study, picking out courses for the first semester, living quarters, etc. So it’s no wonder many students seem to wait until the last minute to file their FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
    But those who procrastinate may be left out in the cold even if they just make the filing deadline.

  • Seniors eligible for scholarship

    Attention drug-free youth. You are eligible to apply for the Marion County Heartland Safe Community Coalition $500 scholarship for drug-free youth. College bound high school seniors who have never used alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, or other illegal drug and who have promoted drug-free lifestyle are eligible. All applicants must be high school seniors in Marion County.

  • Scholarship offered to former student

    West Marion PTSO, in partnership with US BANK, is proud to announce that they will grant a scholarship of $1000 to one deserving 2011 graduate.
    Only former West Marion Elementary students are eligible. The scholarship award will be based on a combination of academic achievement and community/school citizenship.  Money will be paid jointly to the student and school to be attended by the student.
    For a list of application procedures, please see your school counselor.  Applications are due: April 15.
