  • Academic team wins district for sixth consecutive year

    Marion County High School captured the 20th District Governor’s Cup Academic Team Competition for the sixth consecutive year this past weekend at Campbellsville High School.
    The Quick Recall Team led by the freshmen quartet of Abby Blandford, Eilish Brady, Ben Cecil and Joey Costello went undefeated on the day.
    In Written Assessment, 1st place medals went to Lauren Thim in Mathematics, Abby Blandford in Arts and Humanities and Mary Helen Hamilton in Composition.
    Haberlin Roberts earned second place medals in Mathematics and Language Arts.

  • 2011-12 new student registration is Feb. 4

    School registration for children who will be entering school in Marion County Public Schools for the first time in the fall of 2011 will be conducted at all elementary school centers on Friday, Feb. 4, from 12 - 6 p.m.
    Children who will be five years old on or before Oct. 1, should register for kindergarten classes.  Students who are in the 4-year-old program during the 2010-11 school year should register for kindergarten.

  • Retired Boyle County superintendent now acting superintendent

    The Marion County Board of Education voted 3-1 in favor of hiring Steve Burkich as the acting superintendent of Marion County Public Schools.

    Board member DeLane Pinkston was not present at the special-called meeting Friday, Jan. 28, and board member Bernard Miles cast the lone dissenting vote.

    Marion County schools will be closed Thursday, Jan. 27, due to poor road conditions.

    The National Weather Service is predicting a chance of flurries Wednesday night with a low temperature around 22 degrees.

    The weather service is predicting a high around 35 degrees on Thursday and a 20 percent chance of snow Thursday night.

  • Superintendent’s severance agreement includes payment through June 30, 2011

    Former Marion County Superintendent Donald Smith and the Marion County Board of Education have agreed to go their separate ways, but Smith will be receiving a paycheck from the board through June 30, 2011.

    That was part of a severance agreement that the two parties arranged before Smith’s official resignation was approved during the Jan. 25 school board meeting at Calvary Elementary School. (Please see the full agreement below.)

  • School board quizzes Smith

    For nearly three hours Jan. 18, the Marion County Board of Education peppered Superintendent Donald Smith with questions on topics ranging from his residence in another county, his use of a district vehicle, speaking engagements and his leadership style. Two board members even said they questioned whether they could trust him.

    The superintendent defended his record, citing improvements in student test scores and stating his commitment to the community.

    The Marion County Conservation District encourages anyone who may qualify to please apply for the Kentucky Association of Conservation Districts Auxiliary Scholarships. They are the George Crafton Scholarship, the Betty Barrick- Non-Traditional Scholarship, and the Natural Resources Scholarship.
