  • Lt. Governor talks economy, education

    Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson stopped by Marion County Aug. 23, and the economy was on his mind. He was the guest speaker at the Marion County Chamber of Commerce lunch at the Marion County Extension Office.
    This was his second trip to Marion County since he was sworn in as lieutenant governor. His first trip was the day after he took office when he came to Wilbert Plastic Services when that company announced an agreement to make parts for the Ford Escape, which is manufactured in Louisville.

  • $500,000 grant will aid R.L. Schreiber expansion effort

    R.L. Schreiber Inc. opened its Lebanon facility last year, and the company is already moving forward with expansion plans. That effort will also benefit from a $500,000 boost from the state.
    "We're actually expanding what we were already bringing," said Greg Ransdell, R.L. Schreiber CEO.
    R.L. Schreiber is a food base and spice company that serves more than 12,000 customers, including cafeterias, cruise lines, national retailers, restaurants and schools. Its Marion County facility is located on Hendrickson Drive.

  • Judicial center will be closed Sept. 3-4

    The Marion County Judicial Center will be closed Monday, Sept. 3, for Labor Day, and Tuesday, Sept. 4, for a required furlough day.
    The judicial center houses the Marion Circuit and District Courts and the Marion Circuit Clerk's Office. The furlough day was ordered by John D. Minton Jr., chief justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court, for all court services statewide.
    The judicial center will reopen Wednesday, Sept. 5.

  • Court gives initial OK to hiring lobbyist

    A majority of the Marion County Fiscal Court voted in favor of hiring a lobbyist in Frankfort with a few conditions. The court wants to cap its expenses at $10,000 for a year and require the lobbyist to make monthly reports to the court.

    The court voted 4-1 in favor of hiring the lobbyist, with the intent to split the cost with the Lebanon City Council. The city council has not yet taken action on the idea.

  • City council to hold special-called meeting Aug. 27

    The Lebanon City Council is scheduled to have a specia-called meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27, at city hall.

    The items on the agenda are as follows:

    - A noise variance request by the Generation Gap from Aug. 30 through Sept. 2 for the annual Block Party. The Generation Gap has also requested closing M.L. King from Depot Street to Proctor Knott Avenue during this event.

  • Fiscal court to meet at 4 p.m. today

    The Marion County Fiscal Court will hold a special-called meeting at 4 p.m. today, Aug. 23, in room 201 of the David R. Hourigan Government Building.

    The agenda for the meeting is as follows:

    - Minutes of the previous meeting

    - Public hearing on county's five-year solid waste management plan

    - Resolution to designate Marion County as a "Single County Waste Management Area"

    - Resolution and agreement on road resurfacing using "flex funds"

  • Most local races are uncontested

    On Nov. 6, voters will be casting ballots for national, state and local offices, but the local races may have already been decided.

    Unless someone files to run as a write-in candidate, there will not be any contested races for city or school board offices. The deadline for write-in candidates to file is Oct. 26.

    In Lebanon, the only candidates who have filed are the six incumbents on the Lebanon City Council. They are Jerry Abell, Denise Fogle, Jay Grundy, Kate Palagi, Jim Richardson and Darin Spalding.

  • Candidates have filed for General Election

    Marion County voters will have several uncontested local races and a few contested state and national races on the Nov. 6 ballot.
    Here are the candidates who filed before the Aug. 14 deadline.

    Bradfordsville City Commission (four seats) -  Anthony Clarkson, Sandy Gribbins, Travis May and Kathleen Walls.

    Lebanon City Council (six seats) - Jerry Abell, Denise Fogle, Jay Grundy, Kate Palagi, Jim Richardson and Darin Spalding.

  • Fiscal court votes to keep tax rates the same, again

    While prices for groceries and gas continue to rise, Marion Countians can breathe a little easier knowing their county taxes won't follow suit.

    During its Aug. 9 meeting, Marion County Judge/Executive John G. Mattingly recommended that the county not raise taxes, and the Marion County Fiscal Court voted unanimously to keep its 2012 tax rates the same as last year.

    "We've never raised them, so I'd hate to start now," Magistrate Jackie Wicker said.
