  • Two contested races appear on the primary ballot

    Local voters won't have much to decide when they go to the polls May 22.

    Republicans will be able to vote for possible presidential candidates, while Democrats will cast their ballots to decide who will challenge Congressman Ed Whitfield in November.

    Republicans will have four options to select as their preferred presidential nominees, although according to many in the national media, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney is the presumptive nominee who will challenge President Barack Obama in the fall.

  • Larry's Law

    Wednesday, April 18, was a bittersweet day for Melissa Lee Knight and her family.

    It was the day Gov. Steve Beshear signed Senate Bill 115 "Larry's Law" in honor of Knight's brother, Larry, 32, who walked away from a personal care home in August of 2011. He was found dead four weeks later on the banks of the Licking River not far from Falmouth Nursing Home in Pendleton County.

  • Fiscal Court meets April 19

    The Marion County Fiscal Court is scheduled to meet in regular session at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 19, at the David R. Hourigan Government Center.

  • No decision on pill mill bill, road plan funding

    Once again, the legislature will be working overtime.

    April 12 was the final day of the 2012 regular session of the General Assembly, and on Friday, April 13, Gov. Steve Beshear issued a call for a special session, which started Monday, to address two issues: the transportation budget and the pill mill bill, legislation aimed at addressing the availability of prescription drugs.

    Beshear blamed his 2011 election opponent, Senate President David Williams, for the need to call the session.

  • Graffiti, damage to handrails reported at Gorley Trail

    The recently renovated Cecil L. Gorley Trail has already become the target of vandals.
    Someone spray-painted graffiti on a kiosk near the trail and broke some handrails that were recently installed as part of the renovation effort.
    Lebanon Tourist and Convention Commission Executive Director Nicky Reynolds said it's sad that someone would do that.
    "We did all that work to give something to everybody," she said.

  • Congressman speaks on new districts, federal budget

    Congressman Brett Guthrie, perhaps in one of his last appearances representing Marion County, was the guest speaker at the Marion County Industrial Foundation's Friday Forum last week at the David R. Hourigan Government Building.

    Guthrie, a Republican, opened by addressing the redistricting change that has moved Marion County from the Second District, which he represents, to the First District, which is represented by Congressman Ed Whitefield, another Republican.

  • City gives initial support for housing development

    The Lebanon City Council has given its support, in principle, to assist Nally and Hayden with a planned housing development near Wal-mart.

    Tony O'Daniel, a real estate broker, spoke with city officials Monday evening on behalf of Nally and Hayden. The development calls for around 86 residential lots to be built.

  • City approves health insurance plan

    The city council unanimously approved the health insurance plan for city employees on Monday evening, electing to go with a proposal from Humana.

    United Healthcare offered a renewal rate 29 percent higher than the city's current plan. The Humana offer is 8.6 percent less than the city's current plan.

    Under the Humana plan, the city will pay a monthly premium of $29,717.62.

  • Trash talk: Garbage bill could increase

    Marion County residents may see an increase in their garbage fees in the near future.

    During the April 5 Marion County Fiscal Court meeting, Marion County Judge/Executive John G. Mattingly announced that the Nelson County Fiscal Court is increasing its fees for disposing of waste at the Nelson County landfill.

    Starting July 1, Marion County will be charged $11.45 per cubic yard of compacted trash delivered to the Nelson County landfill.

  • One day left for legislature

    Both houses of the Kentucky General Assembly have approved more than 130 bills so far during the 2012 regular session, and Governor Steve Beshear has signed 28 of them into law.

    Those new laws cover a range of topics - from alternate high school diplomas for students with disabilities - to sewer collection charges and pharmacy audits.
