  • Secretary of State candidates believe in their backgrounds

    Bill Johnson is running for Kentucky Secretary of State because he is concerned about the future of the Commonwealth. Alison Lundergan Grimes is running because Kentuckians are hurting and she thinks they need and deserve strong leaders.

    Grimes, the Democratic candidate, and Johnson, the Republican candidate, will square off on Election Day, Nov. 8.

    Grimes, 32, is a business attorney, and she thinks her background is important to understand state and federal election laws as well as business laws in Kentucky.

  • Farmer vs. a farmer in race for ag commissioner

    One candidate to be Kentucky's Commissioner of Agriculture has done stand-up comedy. His opponent thinks his campaign is a joke.

    The Democratic candidate, Robert "Bob" Farmer of Louisville operates his own marketing firm, in addition to his occasional comedy performances. James Comer of Monroe County, the Republican candidate, is a farmer who has also served as a state representative.

  • Emergency management director resigns

    Marion County Judge/Executive John G. Mattingly received an email from Blair announcing that he is resigning effective at midnight, Sept. 30.

    Blair has served as the emergency management director since Oct. 1, 2003.
    "I would like to thank the court and the citizens of Marion County for their support during this time," Blair wrote in his resignation email. "Remember mission first, people always."

  • Tourist commission meeting today

    The Lebanon Tourist and Convention Commission is scheduled to meet at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, in Room 300 of the Centre Square Convention Center.

    The only item on the agenda is an executive session to discuss the resumes submitted for the position of executive director. Under state law, the commission can go into executive session to discuss personnel matters that may lead to the appointment of someone.

  • County offices will be closed Saturday

    Marion County government offices will be closed Saturday, Sept. 24.

    Marion County Judge/Executive John G. Mattingly announced that the county offices at the David R. Hourigan Government Center will be closed for Ham Days. He noted that the front plaza area and the rear parking of the government center will be used for Ham Days activities, so the government offices will be closed during the weekend.

  • Two Marion County deputy jailers arrested

    Two deputy jailers at the Marion County Detention Center were arrested Wednesday morning on federal charges of providing contraband to inmates.

    Shawn Perkins, 35, and Michael Cook, 24, have been arrested on charges of providing contraband to prison inmates. Perkins is also facing a charge of trafficking with intent to distribute illegal narcotics.

    United States Attorney David J. Hale announced the arrests Wednesday.

  • Tourist commission meeting Thursday

    The Lebanon Tourist and Convention Commission has scheduled a special-called meeting for 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, at Centre Square.

    The agenda for the meeting is as follows:

    - Old business: Brown signs estimate approval and Kentucky Living insertion order/November ad approval

    - New business: Application review process, review resumes, outside employment request, duties and responsibilities marketing, Society of Travel Writers 2012 Annual Directory
