    The Marion County Fiscal Court is scheduled to meet at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4.

  • Spalding appointed to city council

    Darin Spalding has been appointed to fill the vacancy on the Lebanon City Council.

    The council voted 4-0 to appoint Spalding during a special-called meeting July 27. Councilman Jay Grundy was not present at the meeting.

    The vacancy was created when Kenny Marrett resigned from the council Tuesday. Spalding appointment is effective until the Nov. 8 election, according to Marion County Clerk Karen Spalding. *

  • Courthouse will be closed Aug. 5-12

    Marion Circuit Clerk Kim May has announced that her office will be shut down from Friday, Aug. 5, through Friday, Aug. 12. During that time, equipment and files from the circuit clerk's office will be moved into the Marion County Judicial Center.

    The new judicial center is scheduled to open Monday, Aug. 15.

  • Bradfordsville Post Office on list for closure study

    The United States Postal Service announced July 26 that it will be studying more than 3,600 post offices for possible closure, and one of those branches is in Marion County.

    The Bradfordsville Post Office is one of more than 130 Kentucky branches identified as being part of the studies.

    The studies are part of the postal service's "retail optimization efforts," according to a press release on the USPS website.

  • Marrett has stepped down from city council

    Kenny Marrett said that he has resigned from his seat on the Lebanon City Council effective noon Tuesday, July 26.

    "I've got other passions that I want to pursue, and sometimes they don't coincide with my responsibilities as a council member," Marrett said.

    He added he planned to continue his work on those other passions, including his work with the Lebanon Main Street Committee and the Marion County Jobs Consortium.

  • Tourism commission meeting Friday afternoon

    The Lebanon Tourist and Convention Commission will meet twice Friday afternoon, July 22.

    The commission will meet at 3:30 p.m. to discuss Youth Explosion, a proposed youth rally for Christ to be held Sept. 9-10 at Centre Square. The event coordinators, which include commission Chairman Dan Lawson, are seeking $7,500 to assist with the event.

    Lawson said at a previous meeting that he will not vote on the funding request because of his involvement with the event.

    The Marion County Fiscal Court is scheduled to meet at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 21, at the David R. Hourigan Government Building.

    The items on the agenda include:

    - Minutes of the previous meeting

    - Approval of the second reading of a budget amendment to include a Homeland Security Grant

    - Consider Southeast Telephone to provide telephone services for the county government

    - Tax rate for the Marion County Health Department

    - Revisions to the Marion County Detention Center Handbook

  • When the smoke clears

    "Where there's smoke there's fire."

    That old adage could ring true regarding the recent resignation of Raywick Fire Chief Chuck Helm. He resigned last week, but the reason for his resignation isn't exactly clear.

    According to Helm, his out-of-town job commitments cause him to be away from the community too much, which is why he decided to resign.

  • Push for E911 continues

    Marion County may be crawling toward E911, but it is getting closer to acquiring the service.

    Marion County Judge/Executive John G. Mattingly told the fiscal court during its July 7 meeting that he had spoken recently with Joe Barrows of the Kentucky Commercial Radio Services Board, and the board may assist the county as well.
