  • Council votes down tourism budget

    The Lebanon City Council voted down the proposed 2011-12 budget for the Lebanon Tourist and Convention Commission Monday evening. Councilmen Jerry Abell, Jay Grundy, Kenny Marrett and Jim Richardson voted against the budget, while Councilwoman Kate Palagi and Denise Fogle voted to approve it.

    Marrett said the budget included too much marketing and too little event funding.

    "There's $100,000 in marketing and $58,000 in investments. I think those two numbers should be reversed," he said.

  • City council meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday

    The Lebanon City Council is scheduled to hold a special-called meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 28. There are two items on the agenda.

    First, the council will consider the first reading of its amended 2010-11 budget. And third, the council will consider the first reading of its 2011-12 budget.

  • Tourism posting new highs in revenue, economic impact

    The Lebanon Tourist and Convention Commission is wrapping up its best year ever, according to Chris Hamilton, the commission's executive director.

    During the commission's June 13 meeting, Hamilton reported that 2010-11 has been a record-setting year in terms of revenue from dining and lodging and the overall economic impact of tourism in the county.

    "Folks, we had a hell of a year," Hamilton told the commissioners.

  • City approves first reading of parking ordinance

    New parking restrictions could be in place soon on North Street and West High Street in Lebanon.

    On June 13, the Lebanon City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance that would prohibit parking within 50 feet of the intersection of North and West High streets on both sides of North Street and both sides of West High Street.

    The council must approve a second reading of the ordinance and publish it before the proposed changes would take effect.

  • Fiscal Court approves 2011-12 budget

    The Marion County Fiscal Court approved the second reading of the 2011-12 budget during its June 16 meeting.

    The budget was approved 3-0, since Magistrates Steve Masterson and John Arthur Elder III were not present at the meeting.

  • Final farewell

    Family, friends, law enforcement officers, local and national officials and members of the public were among the hundreds of people who gathered Saturday afternoon at Marion County High School to pay their respects to Lebanon Police Chief Joe Bell.

    During the service, Lebanon Mayor Gary Crenshaw, who had appointed Bell as the police chief just 14 months earlier, commended Bell for his leadership, his perseverance and his ability to smile in any situation.

  • Brady appointed police chief

    Lebanon Mayor Gary Crenshaw signed a memo June 13 appointing Wally Brady as the city's new police chief.

    Brady served as the assistant chief under Chief Joe Bell, who died June 6, following surgery at Taylor Regional Hospital.

    Brady joined the Lebanon Police Department in 1982. He has worked as a supply officer, a sergeant and a school resource officer.
