    Grocery, liquor and convenience stores in Nelson County could be selling packaged liquor on Sundays by this summer, and, according to some local residents, Marion County needs to follow suit or the local economy could be at stake.

  • Next superintendent introduces himself to the community

    Marion County Board of Education member Alex Ackermann introduced Donald Smith, who will be the next Marion County superintendent, before he spoke at the Marion County Industrial Foundation's First Friday Forum May 1.

    "I'd just like to give a little personal observation about Mr. Smith," she said. "He has a passion for educating children, all children."

  • Ready for the worst

    Swine flu, or H1N1, has arrived in Kentucky.

    As of Monday, the CDC was reporting that at least one Kentuckian had a confirmed case of the latest flu incarnation, and the Kentucky Department of Public Health was reporting five probable cases, the most recent of which is a 3-year-old in Hardin County.

    With more than 280 confirmed cases in the United States, national, state and local health officials have continued to stress the importance of flu prevention measures - such as washing hands regularly and covering mouths and noses when people cough or sneeze.

  • Board cuts nearly $1 million

    The Marion County Board of Education approved $975,000 in budget cuts for the 2009-10 school year during its regular monthly meeting last week. That's just shy of the $1.4 million in cuts needed to keep the school system in stable financial condition, with two to five years of budget cuts undoubtedly on the horizon.

  • New diplomas will recognize extra effort

    In a few weeks, the class of 2009 will receive their diplomas from Marion County High School during the annual graduation ceremony. A few select students will be recognized again for exceeding the minimum graduation requirements to earn the Commonwealth Diploma.

    But MCHS administrators believe more students deserve recognition. And starting with the class of 2010, MCHS students will have the opportunity to earn one of four different diplomas.

  • Local Chrysler dealer here for its customers

    Chrysler LLC will be filing for bankruptcy and beginning a corporate alliance with Fiat SpA, an Italian automotive company.

    Chrysler will file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy under the direction of the U.S. Treasury Department, according to information on the company's corporate website.

    Meanwhile, Pickerill Motor Company in Lebanon will remain open for business.

    Pickerill Motor is the only new car dealership in Marion County, and it has been a Chrysler dealership since 1934. It sells new vehicles by Chrysler and its affiliated brands, Dodge and Jeep.

  • Tech center project to break ground Aug. 10

    November 2010 - that is the estimated completion date for the $5 million addition/renovation project at the Marion County Area Technology Center. The project inched one step closer to completion last week when the Marion County Board of Education approved the design and development documents for the project, as well as the BG-2 and BG-3 applications.

    Those documents are not final, however, until the Kentucky Department of Education gives its stamp of approval.

  • Fiscal court meeting at 4 p.m. today

    The Marion County Fiscal Court is scheduled to meet in regular session at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 7, at the David R. Hourigan Government Administrative Building.

    The agenda for the meeting is as follows:

    - Minutes of previous meeting

    - MCHS FFA student presentation and demonstration

    - Open sealed bids for fuel, lubricants, and road materials for 2009-10 fiscal year

    - Emergency warning system maintenance agreement

    - Agreement with the Administrative Office of the Courts for 2009-10

  • Flash flood warning in effect until Saturday morning

    The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for southern Kentucky, including Marion County. The flash flood warning will remain in effect through Saturday morning.

    According to the weather service, a "complex of thunderstorms with heavy rain" will pass through southern Kentucky today and tonight.

    The storms are expected to continue through tonight as a cold front approaches the area.

  • First case of swine flu reported in Kentucky

    Gov. Steve Beshear announced that the Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH) will report one confirmed case and one probable case of swine flu to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today.
