  • Halloween in the Park is Oct. 31

    Halloween in the Park will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 31, at Graham Memorial Park.

    Trick-or-treating will take place in the City of Lebanon from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 31.

  • Haunted Forest keeps growing, changing

    Five years ago, the children of Eugene Hourigan were talking about what they could do for Halloween. They discussed making a haunted forest in the land around Eugene's home, and they eventually decided if they were going to do it, they might as well open it for the public, too.

    "It's one time a year," said Joyce Hourigan Taylor. "We get together. We have fun. We scare each other."

  • A show of kindness

    Marion Adjustment Center hosted its annual Human Kindness Organization fall festival on Sept. 21. Inmates and staff hosted consumers at Marion County Industries and similar organizations in neighboring communities for a day of games and activities.

  • Sing & Play

    Last week, local school children added their voices to the chorus, and Amos Hopkins and The White Russians performed in Angelic Hall to coincide with the display of the Smithsonian's New Harmonies exhibit. Student choruses from Calvary Elementary, Lebanon Elementary and Marion County High School performed Oct. 16. The White Russians and the Honeysuckle String Band performed Oct. 19.

  • MCPS anticipates K-PREP results

    The Kentucky Department of Education will release the results of the first Kentucky Performance Rating for Educational Progress (K-PREP) this month. State and local educators are anxious about what the results will reveal. Recently, Robyn Oatley of the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence in Lexington made a presentation to the Marion County School Board and the district's leadership team regarding the upcoming test results.

    "Expectations have really risen," Oatley said.

  • City of Lebanon to auction surplus property

    The Lebanon City Council unanimously voted to declare a list of items surplus during its Oct. 8 meeting. The City of Lebanon has scheduled a public auction for 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, to sell those items.

    The surplus items include a 1997 Crown Victoria, a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500, a 1995 Chevrolet Silverado, a rover sewer camera, two Remington Model 700 308 rifles, eight bicycles, computer monitors, PC's printers, a VCR, cameras, VHS and cassette tapes, camera film, flashlights, a hard case with sockets and an ammo case.

    The week's events to complement the Smithsonian "New Harmonies" exhibit on display at Centre Square are as follows:

    - Friday, Oct. 19, 7 p.m. Amos Hopkins and The White Russians at Angelic Hall.

    The Kentucky Fellowship of Musicians will open at 7 p.m., and Hopkins is scheduled to perform at 8 p.m.
