    I witnessed that very thing Saturday at the seventh annual Family Fitness and Safety Day at Graham Memorial Park in Lebanon.
    It was a welcome sight to see.
    I watched children and their parents compete in sack races, run through obstacle courses and they even humored me and did some of my "Girls on the Run warm-up exercises," which included squat jacks.

  • Board does not approve Lady Knights' basketball trips

    Approving trips and fundraisers is usually routine business at the Marion County Board of Education meetings, but it wasn't routine during its regular monthly meeting last week.

    When it was time to approve the overnight trips for the Lady Knights basketball team, Board Member Mike Cecil asked if there was a reason the paperwork was being turned in so early. The trips that were up for approval were trips to basketball tournaments in late December and January in Lexington, Mount Sterling and Louisville.

  • Two restaurants turned over to county attorney regarding tourism taxes

    McB's and Hometown BBQ have been turned over to the Marion County Attorney for being delinquent in turning in tourism taxes they have collected from their customers, according to a report presented Sept. 10 to the Lebanon Tourist and Convention Commission.

    According to the report McB's is nine months delinquent in turning in the tourism taxes it has collected, and Hometown BBQ is five months delinquent.

  • 'Call of the Wildman' renewed

    Animal Planet has announced that Ernie Brown Jr., the Turtleman, and his Turtle Team will be back for a second season.

    Nearly 1.3 million viewers tuned in to the season finale of "Call of the Wildman", which helped Animal Planet achieve its highest ever Labor Day audience.

    Animal Planet has signed an agreement for 20 new episodes featuring Brown's barehanded animal-catching antics.

    The air date for the next season has not yet been announced.

  • State representative's granddaughter has died

    Mia Kylee Simmerman, the 3-year-old granddaughter of State Rep. Terry Mills, was pronounced dead Wednesday afternoon at the UK Medical Center after being found unresponsive at her home.

    "It's a tragic accident and we're grieving. We're grieving hard," Rep. Mills said.

    Kylee is the daughter of Terri Lee Mills and Andy Simmerman of Lexington.

    "It's the greatest pain I've ever experienced," Rep. Mills said.
