  • Lady Knights beat Manual for the crown

    The Marion County High School girls basketball (10-0) team knocked off DuPont Manual (7-2) 44-42 on Tuesday night, Dec. 22, in the finals of the Republic Bank Holiday Classic at Lexington Catholic High School.

    In a match up against the state's top two teams, the Lady Knights prevailed despite shooting 29 percent from the floor. The Lady Knights held a 38-32 rebounding edge and forced Manual into 17 turnovers.

  • Offices will close and trash pick-up will change for New Year's holiday

    The New Year's holiday will affect the schedule for local government offices.

    The County Judge's Office will be closed Dec. 31 through Jan. 3 and reopen Monday, Jan. 4.

    The Marion County Clerk's Office, the PVA Office and the Marion Circuit Clerk's Office will close Dec. 31-Jan. 1.

    The Marion County Health Department will be closed Dec. 31-Jan. 1.

    Lebanon City Hall and the Marion County Sheriff's Office will be closed Jan. 1.

    Garbage pick-up will be affected by the holidays as well.

  • Another candidate files for magistrate's seat

    A third candidate has filed to run for the District E magistrates seat.

    Charlotte Brady Mattingly of McElroy Pike is the latest candidate to toss her hat into the ring.

    Mike Peterson of Miller Pike and incumbent Roger "Cotton" Smothers of Campbellsville Road previously filed to run.

    In addition to the local races, several state positions will be up for election in 2010.

    So far four candidates have officially filed to run for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Jim Bunning.

Ice Storm 2009 Mother Nature's icy wrath causes power and water outages   As the new year approaches, many people across the county and state are crossing their fingers, and toes, (and possibly even extension chords) that history doesn't repeat itself and the ice storm that wreaked havoc on us in 2009 is a thing of the past. But, just in case, keep that generator handy.

  • Assistance for heating costs available

    Do you need assistance with your heating costs?

    Beginning Monday, Jan. 4, the local Community Action office will be assisting low-income families with the LIHEAP CRISIS Program.

    To be eligible for crisis funds, you must be in a heating crisis. You must have a past due/disconnect notice from the electric or natural gas company, or be out of bulk fuel within four days if using propane, fuel oil or kerosene, or wood, or a formal eviction notice from your landlord if heating expenses are included in the rent.

  • Special Election set for Feb. 2

    Monday, Dec. 28, Gov. Steve Beshear issued a writ of election to fill the vacant 24th District seat in the Kentucky House of Representatives. The district includes Casey and Marion counties and a portion of Pulaski County.

    The seat became vacant when Jimmy Higdon resigned from the House after he was elected to fill the vacant 14th District state senate seat.

  • Knights finally fall in Clinton County

    An undefeated run through the regular season ended for the Knights last week in Clinton County during the Twin Lakes Holiday Classic.

    After starting 6-0, the Marion County High School boys basketball team faltered in the final seconds against Rockcastle County. After enduring a three game skid, the Knights were back on track with back-to-back wins in the Mordecai's Holiday Homecoming Classic at the Roby Dome over the weekend.

  • In Brief

    Bradfordsville family looking for place to stay after fire

    A fire at 6 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 17, resulted in smoke and water damage to a house at 205 E. Main Street in Bradfordsville. The Bradfordsville Fire Department responded to the scene.

    Bill Gribbins and his children, ages 16, 14 and 13, were at home at the time. His wife, Gina Gribbins, was at work at Village of Lebanon, where she works as a nurse.

    Gina Gribbins said no one was injured, but repairs to the house will take three to four months.

  • Stocking stuffers: tidbits before Christmas

    With Christmas just days away, the thought of writing a full column on one topic just wasn't going to work. Or maybe it's just the distractions that come with the holidays have rendered me incapable of staying focused on one topic. Either way, instead of a full treatment of anything, I'll offer a few "stocking stuffers" on some items that have caught my attention. - The Jefferson Circuit Court has provided a gift on behalf of open government. Last week, the court issued a decision last week that could have repercussions statewide.

  • Lady Knights off to best start since 2003

    The Marion County High School girls basketball team is off to their best start this decade.

    In the 2003-04 season, the Lady Knights charged out to a 6-0 start and finished the season 15-13 under former Head Coach Freddie Leathers. The current edition of the Lady Knights are currently 7-0, the best start this decade and current Head Coach Trent Milby's best start anywhere he's coached.
