  • Work in progress almost complete

    After more than a decade of planning, renovating and spending, the City of Lebanon will celebrate the grand opening of the cultural and performing arts center at Centre Square on Thursday, July 30.

    According to Roger Marcum, chairperson of the Centre Square committee, the community won't be disappointed.

    "A few weeks ago, I had a tour of the facility. The community is going to be very impressed," he said. "A prime example of the results of visionary leadership."

  • Man kills ex-wife, self

    Cindy M. Tucker, 38, and James R. Brady, 30, were both found dead in the afternoon July 15 at 2245 Danville Highway. The Kentucky State Police ruled the incident a murder/suicide.

    A gun was recovered at the scene.

    "He killed her and then turned the gun on himself," said Trooper Billy Gregory, KSP public information officer.

    Gregory added that the preliminary autopsy (which was conducted July 16 in Louisville) confirmed that Brady killed Tucker. Det. Mike Dubree led the investigation.

  • Lebanon takes the Cup

    Centre College student Max Manning made his President's Cup debut and won all four possible points, much to the dismay of Springfield's finest golfers. Manning and his father, Curt Manning, cleaned house as did the rest of the Lebanon team to win the 2009 President's Cup.

    Lebanon defeated Springfield 21.5 to 8.5. They headed into Sunday's play at Lincoln Homestead State Park with a 9-3 lead, losing only one match outright on Saturday at the Lebanon Country Club (LCC). The locals only needed to win two single matches going into the final portion of the tournament.

  • Cheer and tumble academy comes to Lebanon

    Attention cheerleaders and dancers, there's a new studio in town.

    Damon's CTA (cheer and tumble academy) opened July 1 at the old Majestic Carpets location off of Campbellsville Highway.

    Owner Damon Hicks teaches cheerleading, tumbling and dance to area school squads, all-star teams and individuals from the beginner to advanced levels.

  • High school registration begins Monday

    Marion County High School has announced its registration dates for the 2009-10 academic year. Seniors will register Monday, July 27, from 2-6 p.m. Juniors will register Tuesday, July 28, from 2-6 p.m. Sophomores will register Wednesday, July 29, from 2-6 p.m. Freshmen will register Thursday, July 30, from 2-6 p.m. Students must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian in order to register.

  • Bad news

    This week's Lebanon Enterprise is depressing.

    Any time we have bad news to report, it's depressing, but it's rare that so much bad news happens all at once.

    During the last eight days, Marion County has experienced a murder/suicide, an attempted murder, the arrest of four firefighters (and reports from the Kentucky State Police that more arrests are possible) and a car accident that forced an emergency Caesarean section. More sadly, the baby, Raelyn Michelle "Skeeter" Gribbins, died the day after the accident.

  • Hide the vegetables in a dessert

    I've had several people call and ask me what to do with an over-abundance of zucchini or yellow squash. This is a common problem for gardeners-it happens every year.

    Even though I've scaled back my zucchini to four plants, I also have more than I can eat fresh.

    If you want to freeze the excess, you can. The easiest way is to shred the zucchini, drain and pack in one-cup portions to use in bread, cookies, etc.

  • Baby dies following traffic accident

    A July 14 accident involving two vehicles and a pregnant driver ended tragically when the baby died the following day.

    The Lebanon Police, the Marion County Rescue Squad and Marion County EMS responded to a call of an accident at the intersection of Warehouse Road and W. Main Street at 2:32 p.m. July 14.

    According to the police, Tabitha K. Hutchison, 26, of Lebanon was driving a 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, and Donna M. "Shelly" Gribbins, 29, of Lebanon was driving a 2007 Toyota Corolla. Janice Gribbins, 58, also of Lebanon, was a passenger in the Toyota.

  • Finley man arrested for attempted murder

    Manuel Pittman, 50, of Finley was arrested Thursday evening, July 16, and charged with attempted murder and six counts of first-degree wanton endangerment after he allegedly tried to shoot his daughter's boyfriend.

    According to Kentucky State Police, at 11:52 p.m., Post 15 received information of a domestic related shooting that occurred on Paul Shewmaker Road. KSP Trooper Brian Coyt and deputies from the Marion County Sheriff's Department responded to the scene and discovered that a firearm had been discharged in the direction of Richard Price, 22, of Lebanon.

  • Ladies holding their own at state tourney

    As of press time, the Marion County 11-12-year-old Little League softball all-stars were undefeated at the state tournament in Prestonsburg. Their first victory in pool play came over powerhouse Louisville Valley Sports. Valley Sports finished fifth in the Little League Softball World Series just a few years ago.

    The team played tournament host Prestonsburg on Tuesday night and South London on Wednesday night. Results were unknown as games happened after press time.
