  • Getting the word out about underage drinking

    It was refreshing to see the guest column in the July 15 edition of The Lebanon Enterprise by Brooke Lee. She expressed very well what some students in our community are trying to accomplish to reduce underage drinking. Many people think the problem of underage drinking in Marion County is minimal or doesn't exist. But, talk to teenagers, they will tell you that it goes on all the time.

  • Attorney General announces scam alert

    The Attorney General's office issue the following consumer alert July 21:

    Attorney General Jack Conway today warned consumers who have purchased classified ads in newspapers that they could be targeted by scam artists and should not give out personal information over the phone.

    "We've received complaints from a couple of classified advertisers that someone claiming to be from the newspaper is contacting them asking for credit-card information and Social Security numbers," General Conway said.

  • Boys’ golf looks stronger than ever

    Freddie Leathers doesn't mince words when it comes to what he thinks of this year's boys golf team.

    "This is probably the strongest team I've had since my first year. I think it is the best team I've ever had," Leathers said.

    Leathers' tenure as coach dates back to 1987 and includes 13 seasons as head of the program.

    His first team included Matthew Garrett, Todd Abell, Travis George and Chris Bradshaw. They finished second in the region.

  • Lebanon man dead, juvenile being charged with murder after fatal accident

    A Lebanon man is dead and a juvenile is being charged with murder after a fatal accident on Saturday, July 25, in Gravel Switch. According to Kentucky State Police, the collision occurred at 11:19 a.m. on Beech Fork Road, eight miles east of Lebanon.  A 1996 Dodge pickup was traveling west on Beech Fork Road when the driver, a juvenile who's name has not been released, failed to negotiate a curve and left the road.

  • Police on alert for meth labs

    A few weeks ago, Byron Richardson was helping clean up a suspected methamphetamines lab on Country Club Drive. Last week, he led training sessions with members of the Lebanon Police Department about the dangers of meth and the procedures they should follow if they discover a lab in the future.

    For some, the training was a refresher course. For others, the training provided fresh information.

    Methamphetamines are considered a stimulant, like cocaine. There is a key difference, however.

  • Health reform fears run amuck

    Years ago, when I still lived and worked in Iowa, I was on a plane from Chicago to Omaha when an older man who walked with a cane and severe limp took the seat next to mine.

    He was on his way back to British Columbia, and he still had to switch planes a few more times before he got home. As we talked, I couldn't help asking him about his health issues.

    When I asked him what he thought of Canadian health care system? He said he loved it.

  • Marion County Junior Miss is Aug. 1

    Marion County Junior Miss, Inc. will present the 2010 Marion County Junior Miss Program on Saturday, Aug. 1, at 7 p.m. at Marion County High School. Twenty-two young women will participate in this year's program with the theme of "Circus, Circus".

    The platform for America's Junior Miss is "Emphasis on Education" and the participants will be judged on interview, talent, scholastics, fitness, and self-expression (in order of importance).

  • Cornhole Classic is Saturday, Aug. 1

    The third annual Central Kentucky Cornhole Classic is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 1, and the first prize winners could take home $2,000.

    There is no general admission for the event but teams are encouraged to register in advance so as not to be shut out. The 2007 event filled up 64 teams the day before, and 91 teams played in 2008. The tournament will only except 64 teams this year, so don't wait to register. When 64 teams are signed up, nobody else gets in. Entry is $50 per two-man team.

  • Special school board meeting tonight

     The Marion County Board of Education has scheduled a special-called meeting at 7 p.m. tonight, July 30, at the board of education building, 755 E. Main Street in Lebanon.

    The agenda for the meeting is as follows:

    - Consider approval of construction contract for the Marion County Area Technology Center renovation/addition project and associated direct purchase orders, pending approval from the Kentucky Department of Education

    - Consider approval of revised BG-1 Form for the ATC renovation/addition, pending KDE approval

  • Flash flood warning in effect until Friday morning

    The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for Marion County and much of central Kentucky. The watch is in effect from 9 p.m. Thursday, July 30, through Friday morning, July 31.
