  • Baseball faces another busy week

    The Marion County High School baseball team faces another challenging week. They face another round of district opponents as they jockey for tournament position.

    The Knights opened the week on Tuesday against Adair County on the road. Results were unknown at press time.

    On Wednesday the Knights host Washington County High School at 5:30 p.m. The Knights won the first game at Washington County 3-2.

  • It's time to plan for 4-H Camp 2009

    It is time to begin planning for 4-H Camp. As has become a tradition, we have many exciting events and activities planned for the five-day excursion, June 2-6, at Lake Cumberland 4-H Center.

    4-H Camp forms for campers, teen and adult volunteers are available at the Marion County Extension office at this time. Camp applications are due into the extension office by May 15th

    The fee for this year's camp is $150.00, with limited 4-H camp scholarships available. We will be attending camp again this summer with others from Green, Clinton and Adair counties.

  • Drug testing for students proposed

    Lisa Eubanks spoke with the board of education on behalf of the Marion County Heartland Safe Community Coalition about forming a committee to look at drug intervention programs for youth.

    Board chairwoman Sr. Kay Carlew said she would like board members and Donald Smith to review the information provided about drug intervention. Smith has been selected to succeed Roger Marcum as the next superintendent of Marion County schools.

    Part of the discussion included the possibility of drug testing for students, particularly those involved in extracurricular activities.

  • Baseball players earn their stripes

    The Marion County High School baseball team survived a tough week, winning two of five games while sending two games into extra innings.

    Knights Head Coach Chad Spalding is looking for more from his offense in hopes of at least splitting the remaining games on the schedule.

  • Lancers lose in overtime

    The return of former Western Kentucky Hilltopper Boris Siakam wasn't enough to push the Lebanon Lancers past the Cincinatti Stallions in the second week of Kentucky Basketball Developmental League play.

    The Lancers fell 111-103 in the extra period.

    Siakam played for last year's squad but has been busy getting married and trying out for other squads recently.

    "He's gonna be off and on (the team) because he's working out for different people," Lancers Head Coach Mark Bell said.

    For some gardeners the tactile experience of maintaining the garden is not really what they're after.  I love the whole process but I realize that most people just want things to look good without too much fuss. There in lies the mission of the Perennial Plant Association's "Plant of the Year" program.

    Each year industry professionals vote for what they think is an outstanding perennial, this year the votes have been cast for Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola'.

  • Volunteering for the kids

    Desmond Spalding was honored earlier this year by the Women of Color as their 2009 Citizen of the Year. The award was a surprise to Spalding.

    "I was wondering why my wife kept asking me if I was going to dress up," he said.

    The award was presented to Spalding during the organization's annual Black History Celebration in February.

    Spalding, Jerry Evans and Jackie Furmon were named to the board of directors of the Marion County Youth Center, which was incorporated as a non-profit organization last summer by Mary Cowherd and Camille English.

  • Lebanon Mayor Crenshaw in Louisville hospital

    Lebanon Mayor Gary Crenshaw is currently in Norton's Hospital in Louisville after he had a pulmonary embolism, a sudden blockage in a lung artery, last week.

    According to Lebanon City Administrator John Thomas, Crenshaw was doing okay as of press time, but he will be in the hospital a minimum of three to five days.

  • A community supportive of the arts

    Recently, all the elementary schools in the district celebrated an Arts and Humanities Day. Artists, musicians and performers of all kinds visited the schools to share their creativity and skills with students. These arts and humanities days were planned to support the curriculum and instruction given by elementary art, music, drama and dance teachers while also providing the knowledge that the arts are alive in their very own community. These young students joyfully experienced a broad range of the arts from West African visual art to the Appalachian tradition of square dancing.
