    Exchange student experience is rewarding

    I have been involved with foreign exchange students now for several years as a local coordinator with CIEE: Council on International Educational Exchange. In that time, I've learned that the world can be made better through cultural exchange through the CIEE mission to help people gain understanding, acquire knowledge and develop skills for living in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world.

  • SB-1 will change how schools are measured

    When State Rep. Jimmy Higdon recalled serving on an education task force last summer, he said he remembered lots of disagreements among the members regarding the state education accountability system. In particular, he recalled several discussions about the merits of writing portfolios.

    "I thought there was no way on God's green earth that we would reach a compromise," Higdon said.

    In the end, however, that's exactly what happened when Gov. Steve Beshear signed Senate Bill 1 into law March 26.

  • Softball team 4-4 heading into break

    Three wins last week helped end a three game opening skid and point the Marion County High School softball team in the right direction under new coach Trent Milby.

    "We're getting better. We won four of five this week," Milby said. "We're starting to hit the ball better. We lost some close games but then started hitting the ball better and playing good defense and that equals wins. We're working on changing their mentality to win every game instead of playing just for fun."

  • School board meeting at 7 p.m. tonight

    The Marion County Board of Education is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. tonight, April 14. Last night, the board held a special-called meeting to discuss the finalists to become the next superintendent.

  • County judge's office closing early this weekend

    The Marion County judge/executive's office will close at 1 p.m. today, Friday, April 10, and will be closed Saturday, April 11.

    Marion County Judge/Executive John G. Mattingly issued a press release Thursday. He also noted that sanitation crews may be running earlier than usual.

  • Lebanon City Council to meet Monday evening

    The Lebanon City Council will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, April 13.

     

    According to the agenda, the council will discuss park concessions, a Relay for Life request and renewal of the city's health insurance policy.

      FEMA, local officials meet again

    Federal Emergency Management Agency officials returned to Marion County March 26, to discuss what ice storm-related expenses are eligible for reimbursement from the federal government.

    The incorporated cities in the county, the Marion County Fiscal Court, the school district, all the local fire departments, both water districts, the Loretto Motherhouse (as a non-profit nursing home) and the Lebanon Housing Authority recently applied to be considered for Requests for Public Assistance from FEMA.

  • The taste of onions can be so sweet

    This week I'm featuring sweet onions, two side dish recipes that I tried recently and was quite pleased with.

    The Baked Onions are so simple and delicious, great with grilled meat. (They could be cooked on the grill, too, I guess, though I haven't tried it.)

    The Scalloped Sweet Onions are terrific made with Vidalia onions, which are just showing up on the spring market.

    Baked Onions

    3 large sweet onions

    Salt

    Pepper

    Paprika

    Butter 1-2 cans beef consommé

  • Hardins keep dairy in the family

    Farming has always been part of Todd Hardin's life. He remembers helping on his grandfather's farm at a young age.

    "I've been milking since I was 10 years old," Todd said.

    After he graduated from high school, he recalled discussing his future with his father, Lynos Hardin.

    "Dad asked me what I want to do. I said farm," Todd Hardin said, "and he went out and bought some land."

    Todd's wife, Jill Hardin, is no stranger to farming, either. She grew up in St. Mary, where her father raised hogs and beef cattle.

  • Fire destroys farm equipment on Ike Lane

     An equipment shed full of farm equipment was destroyed early Tuesday morning at 165 Ike Lane in St. Mary.

    The Raywick Fire Department was dispatched to the scene at 4:30 a.m., and according to Raywick Fire Chief Chuck Helm, the shed was fully involved with the firefighters arrived on the scene.

    The shed belongs to Larry Mattingly. It was full of farm equipment — tractors, lawnmower, balers, wagons and more — according to Helm.

    "Everything that he had was in that building," Helm said.
