  • School board making its most important decision

    When the Marion County Board of Education first met with Mike Oder, the consultant it hired to help with its superintendent search, Oder shared an important truth with them.

    If the search goes well, and the district hires a strong candidate, the board of education and the screening committee will get credit for doing a good job.

    If the search goes poorly, and the district hires a candidate who doesn't fit well, the board of education will get the blame.

  • MCHS sharing the power of a wish

    Making wishes come true... Marion County High School students have been doing it for three years now. Through their tireless efforts and fund-raisers, such as this past weekend's Junior Mister competition, local students have been raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

    For almost three decades, the Make-A-Wish Foundation has been granting the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.

  • Tornado warning in effect until midnight

    The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for portions of southern Indiana, southern Ohio and Kentucky, including Marion County. The tornado warning remains in effect until midnight, April 3.

    The NWS forecast for this evening calls for showers and thunderstorms, which could produce heavy rainfall. East winds of 10 to 16 miles per hour, becoming southwest winds, are possible, with gusts as high as 29 miles per hour. 

    The NWS is predicting a 90 percent chance of precipitation with a half to three-quarters of an inch of rainfall.

  • Shrimp never tasted so good

    I never met a shrimp I didn't like.

    I've tried hundreds of shrimp recipes over the years and even though some were definitely better than others, I can honestly say I had no trouble eating any of them.

    I think it's in my genes, as my father was also a shrimp-lover.

    When I was a little girl, we used to go to a wonderful restaurant in Danville, Ill., (home of Dick VanDyke and Gene Hackman) called Connou's. It was located in old railroad dining cars (green and silver, as I recall) and had wonderful food.

  • MCHS students design new school flag

    Students in Greg Conley's Special Topics class are putting the new Corel Drawx4 software to good use by re-designing a new flag for the school. Eighteen students took on the task.   The task was simple:   • Design a flag that represents the school with class.

    • Make sure to include the primary school colors - maroon (main), navy blue and silver as accent colors.

  • Veto period provides legislators time to reach agreements on unresolved issues

    As my colleagues and I left Frankfort on March 13 for constitutionally designated veto days, a common sense of relief was felt knowing we had approved some key pieces of legislation that are awaiting the Governor's signature into law and will have far reaching effects on a number of our citizens. In last week's column, I shared with you the highly anticipated passage of Senate Bill 1, which eliminates the Commonwealth Accountability Testing System through a phase out process.

  • County may take over dead-animal pick-up

    The Marion County Fiscal Court spent more than an hour Monday afternoon discussing its options for dealing with dead animals. No decisions were made, but the magistrates spoke favorably of having the county take over dead animal removal.

    The county has not had dead animal removal since its private service provider suspended its service Feb. 27.

  • Softball cranks up this week

    The Marion County High School fast pitch softball team began their season this week with a flurry of road games.

    The Lady Knights, under the helm of new Head Coach Trent Milby, opened the week Monday at John Hardin High School in Hardin County.

    John Hardin and Marion County never played last season. John Hardin finished the season 11-18, the fifth worst record in the Fifth Region. Marion County finished 7-14, the fourth worst record in the region.

  • Junior Mister is Saturday at MCHS

    The Marion County High School Beta Club is pleased to present the 4th annual Marion County Junior Mister Pageant this Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Roby Dome.   This amusing event is held each year to raise money for the Make A Wish Foundation. There are 15 young men competing in this year's program who will perform fitness, poise, and talent presentations. For a price of $5, audience members will enjoy Saturday Night Fever and get to cheer on their favorite participants. Tickets will be sold at the door.
