  • Couple celebrates 69 years

     

    George Owens Jr. and Grace (Porter) Owens of Lebanon celebrated 69 years of marriage on Oct. 28, 2017.
    They have seven children - Grace Owens, deceased, George Owens III, Lydia Ann (Owens) White, Joseph Louis Owens, Charles Sylvester Owens and William Thomas Owens, both deceased, and David Lee Owens.
    They have 13 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

    Rob and Nancy Spragens’ granddaughter, Abby Lala, played on the Christian Academy of Louisville state championship field hockey team. She is a freshman and started for them.

  • FOOTBALL: Knights finish winless for second time in three years

    Wins had eluded both Marion County and Nelson County this season. The Cardinals hadn’t won since October of 2015. The Knights hadn’t won since last October.
    Not even pouring rain and dropping temperatures could take away the sweet taste of victory when one of these teams finally got over the hump Friday evening.
    Nelson County defeated Marion County 26-6 in Bardstown as the Cardinals avoided back-to-back winless campaigns while sending the Knights to their second winless season in three years.

  • Definitely devoted

    On College GameDay back on Oct. 21, former college and NFL quarterback Tim Tebow gave a rousing pep talk to Tennessee, who was preparing to face top ranked Alabama. The Volunteers were heavy underdogs against the mighty Crimson Tide. Thirty-point underdogs to be exact. That didn’t matter to Tebow, who delivered an impassioned speech directly at the Vols.

  • Vaught’s Views: UK is counting on Diallo this season

    Hamidou Diallo almost left Kentucky after one semester for the NBA before deciding to stay at UK. Now he’s being counted on as UK’s most explosive — and one of its most experienced players even though he’s yet to play in a regular-season game — this season.
    No one doubts his athleticism. He had the best numbers of any Wildcat at the preseason combined for NBA scouts.

  • VOLLEYBALL: Lady Knights win first region tourney game since 2012

    The Elizabethtown Panthers showed off their dominating firepower in the regional semifinals, defeating the Lady Knights in three sets, 19-25, 16-25, 17-25, on Oct. 25 at Nelson County High School.
    “We knew Elizabethtown would be a handful because of how well they played this season,” Head Coach David Hibbard said. “The simple story is, they just had too much firepower for us to handle and we couldn't score enough points in return.”
