  • Lady Knights play for district softball championship tonight

    The Marion County High School softball team is scheduled to play host Taylor County at 6 p.m. Tonight, May 23, in the 20th District tournament championship.
    Marion County defeated Campbellsville, 10-0, in the opening round, and Taylor County reached the title game by defeating Adair County, 7-1.
    The Lady Knights and Lady Cardinals have played twice this season. Marion County won both games by scores of 4-2 and 6-0.

  • Romney wins Republican Presidential primary

    In a largely symbolic election, Mitt Romney won the Kentucky Republican presidential primary.
    Statewide. Romney received 117,599 votes with 119 of 120 counties reporting.
    His opponents for the Republican nomination suspended their campaigns before Kentucky held its primary on May 22.
    Texas Congressman Ron Paul, the father of Sen. Rand Paul, received 22,071 votes. Rick Santorum received 15,628 votes, and Newt Gingrich received 10,479 votes. And 10,356 Republican voters cast ballots for uncommitted.

  • National Dog Bite Prevention Week is May 19-25

    The U.S. Postal Service continues its tradition of calling attention to one of the nation’s most commonly reported public health problems: dog attacks and bites. From nips and bites to actual attacks, violent dog behavior continues to pose a serious threat to our employees.
    To emphasize the enormity of this issue, we are now reporting total attacks and dog bites as one number. Last year, nearly 5,600 Postal Service employees were victimized by dogs. But that number pales in comparison to the more than 2 million children who received dog bite injuries in a single year.

    Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Langford of Lebanon announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Brandi Lynne Langford, to Matthew Thomas Hale, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Gilbert of Lancaster.
    Langford graduated from BCTC and is employed as a staff nurse.
    Hale attended Garrard County High School and is now a sergeant in the United States Marine Corp.
    The wedding is set for 6 p.m. Saturday, May 26, 2012 at First Christian Church, Lebanon. A reception will follow in the church basement.

  • Couple will celebrate golden anniversary June 2


    Joseph M. ‘Dee Dee’ and Ada Hamilton of Loretto will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary June 2, 2012. They were married June 2, 1962, in Holy Cross. There will be a Mass at 4 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church.
    Mr. Hamilton is retired from G.E. after 37 years of service. Mrs. Hamilton is retired from the Marion County Board of Education after 22 years of service.
    Hamilton is the former Ada J. Smith.
    They have two children, Susan Spalding and Dallas Hamilton, and four grandchildren.

  • Skin cancer is most common cancer in U.S., yet one of the most preventable

    As summer quickly approaches, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has joined the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and National Park Service (NPS) to emphasize the dangers of skin cancer and has provided simple steps Americans can take to protect themselves. The National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention designated the Friday before Memorial Day “Don’t Fry Day” as a way to highlight sun safety.
