  • BASEBALL: Knights retreat to warmer weather over Spring Break

    Sunny weather. Beautiful beaches. Warm temperatures. Sounds like the picture perfect vacation. For Marion County baseball, it will be the weather they’ll hit the diamond under.
    After Spring turned right back to Winter last week, canceling several games and matches for Marion County sports, the Knights will head south to not just soak up the warm weather, but play four games at Historic Dodgertown at Vero Beach.

  • New lights up at Graham Memorial Bark ball fields

    When Little League Baseball teams convene from across Kentucky to play at Graham Memorial Park over the summer, they will be playing under some new and bright lights.
    City of Lebanon employees have been busy putting up new LED lights on two fields at Graham Memorial Park along with Jason Tatum, who is wiring up the new lights, and Larry Smith, who brought cranes to lift old poles out of the ground.
    Matthew “Moo Moo” Mattingly, the park activities director, cited the age of the poles as the predominant reason for the installation of the new lights.

  • Bracket busters

    Filling out an NCAA tournament bracket has become something of a yearly tradition.
    Over 60 million Americans fill out a bracket each year, despite the odds of filling out the perfect bracket stacked high against them (the odds are one in 9.4 quintillion to be exact). Sports fans and non-sports fans alike will fill out a bracket and join bracket contests with family, friends or co-workers, with prizes, cash and bragging rights on the line. Research will be done, numbers will be crunched and fans will seek to gain an edge to get a perfect- or darn close to- bracket.

  • SOFTBALL: Lady Knights face Titans, Cards at home before Spring Break

    It will be home cooking for Marion County before Spring Break kicks off. The Lady Knights will hope the weather will finally cooperate to get games in against the Mercer County Titans and Nelson County Lady Cardinals, with both games set to be played on Talley Field.
    The Lady Knights will play Mercer County at 6 p.m., tomorrow, while the Lady Cards will play Marion County at 6 p.m., Friday.

  • 2 local children killed in wreck

    Two local children died at the scene of a car crash on Sunday, March 25, in Hardin County after their family vehicle lost control on Bluegrass Parkway.

    According to Kentucky State Police, the accident took place at 3:05 p.m., at the five-mile marker on the Bluegrass Parkway.

    George Michael Smith, 36, of Lebanon was driving with Crystal Lynn Shipp, 27, of Gravel Switch, and four children in a Nissan minivan. The children were three females age four, two, and one and one 3-year-old male.

  • The Emperor’s New Clothes

    Kentucky Classic Arts at Centre Square opened the student production of The Emperor’s New Clothes, an adorable children’s play, running March 22-24.   • TENNIS: Swencki encouraged by first match, still sees room for improvement

    After dodging the snow and rain that had wreaked havoc on Marion County sports schedules, the Marion County tennis team finally hit the tennis court on Thursday to play the Bardstown Tigers.
    Knights coach Noah Swencki was pleased with his team’s performance to open the season.
    “It was a good start, especially for the girls,” he said.

  • Vaught’s Views: Justin Lewis glad to still be part of UK baseball resurgence

    His season has not gone exactly the way he hoped so far, but junior pitcher Justin Lewis does like the way one thing is going — the perception of Kentucky baseball.
    “I can tell a big difference. It used to be if somebody asked me I played ball at UK, I knew they meant basketball,” said Lewis, a Georgia native. “Now they let me know that they know I play baseball. That’s really good.

  • Good Friday and Easter closings

    The Marion County Clerk’s Office will be closed Friday, March 30, in observance of Good Friday and Saturday, March 31, in observance of Easter. The Marion County Clerk’s Office is open every Saturday from 8:20 a.m. to 11:50 a.m., except on holiday Saturdays.

    The Dave R. Hourigan building will be closed Friday, March 30. 

    Friday’s garbage will be picked up on Monday, April 2.
