  • Gardner drives away the competition

    Ten years is a long time.

    From 2000 to 2010, the Lebanon Country Club (LCC) has gone over the 50-year mark for having the Lebanon Invitational Tournament (LIT).

    In that same time period, a new 18-hole golf course opened up to the public.

    In those 10 years, LIT champions have come and gone but only one thing has remained the same: Dave Gardner is still the champion of the longest drive.

    Gardner won, again, Friday at LCC. He beat LCC club champion T.J. Raikes by a few yards, he said.

  • Manning claims LIT crown

    Dr. Curt Manning, the No. 2 seed in this year's championship flight of the Lebanon Invitational Tournament, defeated last year's champion Pat "Woody" Clements on the 18th hole Monday afternoon for the 52nd LIT crown.

    Manning is a first time winner of the LIT championship flight. According to Jerry Reynolds, tournament director, Manning has finished second several times.

    Manning defeated Springfield's Mikey Yates in the morning final four match to advance to the finals. Clements, from Louisville, defeated Josh Matney in the final four.

  • Boys' golf misses a chance

    The Marion County High School boys' golf team missed a chance when they lost to one of the region's top teams in Boyle County on Thursday at Rosewood.

    "I was disappointed because we had a golden opportunity to upset a Boyle County team that has won two tournaments this year and is considered the second best team in the region," Knights Head Coach Freddie Leathers said. "Both teams struggled tonight and it seemed that both teams were looking forward more to the long weekend than the match."

  • Lady Knights get revenge

    The Marion County High School girls' golf team avenged the blemishes on their match play record this season by offing Taylor County and Adair County on Thursday at Pinewood Country Club in Columbia.

    The Lady Knights previously lost to Taylor County and tied with Adair, thus ruining their perfect match play record.

    Hayley Abell shot an astounding 37 to lead both teams. Amy Brown shot a 42 while Olivia Carrico shot a 44. Taylor Howard finished with a 56 while Brianna Reynolds left with a 67.

  • Good Resonance

    The Sisters of Loretto have had a major presence in Kentucky and in Marion County in particular for hundreds of years. From their beginnings, they have sought to better the communities in which they work in a number of ways.

    Some of those ways have been more prominent than others, such as their work as educators. Visitors are welcome to walk around the grounds of the Motherhouse, located just outside Loretto. They offer retreat space for groups and for individuals as well.

    But another service they offer has been more subtle.

  • Lady Knights net first win

    Marion County High School's girls' soccer program netted their first win of the season on Sunday, beating North Laurel 2-2 during a penalty kick shoot out at Elmer J. George Field.

    Sophomore Claire Hagan was a wall in the net, keeping North Laurel out of the goal in the second half and coming up big during penalty kicks.

    "I told her before the shoot out started, 'This is where you make a name for yourself,'" Lady Knights Head Coach Hart Hagan said. "Any nerves she had she put them aside. It just shows how strong her instincts are."

  • Block Party Boogie

    The Generation Gap hosted its annual Block Party over the Labor Day weekend. In addition to music, games and food, the Generation Youth held a dance contest. The Marion County Youth Center also performed a few dance routines for the crowd.

  • Consistently good chicken recipes

    Here are two chicken dishes I have fixed for many years with consistently good results. The Chicken Parmesan is as close as I could get to the dish my grandma Dillon and my mom made. My kids (and most taste-testers) always liked it. It's easy and delicious. I always serve spaghetti with it, to soak up the extra sauce.

  • Knights fall to John Hardin in opener

    For three quarters, it looked as though the smaller, slower Knights could pull an upset over the second best team in Class 5A.

    Athleticism and size prevailed in the fourth however, as John Hardin High School used big plays to put the Knights away at John J. Boswell Field on Saturday night during the Heart of Kentucky Pigskin Classic.

    The Knights nearly took a big hit for the rest of the season, however, when junior quarterback Ryan Peterson went down on the last play of the first half with an apparent rib injury.

  • JV golfers step up

    The Marion County High School boys' golf team showcased new talent on the varsity squad on Saturday during the Tates Creek Invitational as the Knights shot a team score of 333.

    Aaron Hamilton, Logan Medley and Korey Hundley hit the links for the Knights in the tournament as the team was without number three and four golfers Brian Loper and Blair Gorley.
