    Marion County’s Distinguished Young Woman Bailey Spalding left for the state competition Sunday. On Friday, her family and the local Distinguished Young Woman committee hosted a send-off reception for her at the Marion County Public Library.
    The state program is Jan. 17-18 at the Singletary Center for the Arts in Lexington.

  • Show of dedication

    Members of the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard have served their country in times of war and times of peace. Today, they honor their fellow veterans by leading military funeral rites throughout Central Kentucky — no matter the weather.
    In the midst of last week’s bitter cold, the honor guard was on hand for Jan. 6 services at Lebanon National Cemetery. According to weather.com, the temperature was 0 degree Fahrenheit with a wind chill that made it feel like -20 degrees that afternoon.

  • Kicking ‘grass

    The 2014 Kentucky Bluegrass Music Kickoff could be a pretty “lonesome” affair.
    Flatt Lonesome will be making a return appearance at the festival this year, and the Lonesome River Band is the headliner for this year’s dinner show.
    “For the quality of this show, you have to go to Branson [Mo.] or Pigeon Forge [Tenn.] to see anything close to this,” said Brad Lanham, president of the Kentucky Fellowship of Musicians.

  • Casey murder trial moved: Judge concerned biker gang may have intimidated jury pool

    LIBERTY — Concerned that potential jurors may have been intimidated by the influence of motorcycle gang members, Casey Circuit Judge Judy Vance granted a last-minute motion by prosecutors Jan. 7 to move David Salyers' murder trial to another venue just before jury selection was to begin.

  • Deceased in Taylor County murder-suicide identified

    Paul Dewayne Sprowles and Karyn Rae Meeks are dead after an apparent murder-suicide last week on Finley Ridge Road.
    The Taylor County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident, which happened at about 11 a.m. Jan. 7.
    According to Taylor County Sheriff Allen Newton, the incident is being investigated as a homicide and suicide.
    Detectives and sheriff’s deputies were on the scene for about two hours collecting evidence and attempting to piece together what happened.
    Newton interviewed a witness to the event.

    Marion County Superintendent Taylora Schlosser announced Friday that Marion County High School Assistant Principal Christina McRay will act as an interim principal at Lebanon Middle School for the remainder of the school year.

    Last week’s single-digit temperatures not only caused school to be cancelled in Marion and surrounding counties, but also contributed to several heating-related issues at multiple Marion County Public Schools.

  • Shepherdsville man gets 12 years for home invasion

    Lawrence W. Inman, 32, of 503 Salt Well Road in Shepherdsville was sentenced to 12 years in prison in Marion Circuit Court recently for second-degree robbery and impersonating a police officer.
    Inman was indicted for first-degree robbery and impersonating a police officer related to a home invasion that occurred Jan. 1, 2013.
