  • 16 are indicted for drugs

    Last week, state and local law enforcement served sealed indictments against 16 individuals. The sealed indictments were originally filed July 19.

    All of the indictments involved drugs charges of some sort.

    They are as follows:

    - Timothy Buckler, 45, of 352 S. Woodlawn Avenue in Lebanon was indicted for first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance (second or subsequent offense) and first-degree persistent felony offender.

  • Man with local ties dies in single-vehicle crash

    A New Haven man died Tuesday of last week after a single-vehicle crash in LaRue County.

    According to LaRue County Deputy Marcus Jackson, Joseph David "Joe David" Ray Shoffner, 19, was driving near Lincoln Boyhood Home at Knob Creek about 4:20 p.m. when he lost control of the Chevrolet Blazer. The tires dropped off the right side of the roadway and Shoffner overcorrected. The vehicle went into a side skid and rolled three or four times.

    Shoffner, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected. LaRue County Fire Department responded also to the scene.

  • Raikes is crowned club champ

    After starting the day two strokes behind, T.J. Raikes shot a 71 on Sunday to beat Curt Manning by two strokes in the championship flight of the Lebanon Country Club club championship.

    Raikes shot 70 and 71 for a total of 141 to claim the club championship. Manning was close behind, shooting 68 and 75 for a 143.

    Defending champion Tommy Carrico took third place, shooting 72 and 74 for an overall 146.

    Adam Milby (71, 76) and Matthew Gribbins (73, 74) were close behind in fourth place with 147's.

  • Hagan heads up girls' soccer

    Bardstown native Hart Hagan will take the reins as the Marion County High School girls' soccer head coach this season.

    Hagan inherits a team that finished last season with five wins and 10 losses and a second round exit in the 29th District tournament.

    He replaces Neil Payne, who recently accepted a teaching and head coaching position at Montgomery County High School.

  • Knights have an up and down week

    The Marion County High School boys' golf team struggled to start the season but showed steady improvement after the first week of play.

    "We graduated two excellent golfers. We've got three kids to build on," Head Coach Freddie Leathers said. "We're trying to rebuild."

    The Knights competed in two tournaments last week, faring 20 strokes better as a team in the second tournament.

  • Thrilling night

    Christine Mattingly had trouble going to sleep Sunday morning, but so did the rest of her family, according to her mother, Carol.   What time did she finally get to sleep?   "Probably around 5 o'clock," Mattingly said.

    The excitement was understandable since she had been named the 2011 Marion County Junior Miss. In addition to winning the overall title, Mattingly also received awards in every category - fitness, interview, scholastic, self-expression and talent.

    Ready or not, school is back in session in Marion County.

    While many children (and adults) are still getting used to their new routines, including waking up earlier in the mornings, the overall sense seems to be that students and educators alike are energized and ready to get the school year started.

  • Karen Sypher is no Rosa Parks

    Karen Sypher is unbelievable.

    The police officers who investigated her initial accusations against University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino did not find her credible.

    The jury who listened to the evidence and the testimony during her recently concluded federal trial found her guilty of six counts - threatening communications with intent to extort (three counts), making a false statement to a government agent (two counts) and retaliation against a victim.

  • Washington County resident sentenced to 53 years in Tennessee murder case

    A Knox County, Tenn., judge on Friday, Aug. 6, rejected the notion that the lone female suspect in a January 2007 torture slaying was a young innocent under the domination of brutal killers.

    Instead, Criminal Court Judge Richard Baumgartner deemed Vanessa Coleman, 22, a street-savvy woman in firm command of her actions and callously indifferent to the consequences.
