  • Football kicks off Aug. 28

    Kentucky high school football begins Friday but as customary under Jeff Robbins, Marion County will take the opening week off to scout.

    The Knights graduated a senior class that had the most wins in program history, ending with a loss to eventual state runner-up Lone Oak in the state semifinals.

    The cupboard is by no means bare, with several key performers from last year's squad returning.

    As always under Robbins, the team's strengths will rely on running by committee.

  • Crazy week in girl's golf

    Weather conditions made for an abbreviated week for the Marion County High School girls' golf team.

    The Lady Knights completed one match on Monday of last week against Casey County at Casey. They won 185 to 213 to improve to 3-0 in match play this season.

    Olivia Carrico led the Lady Knights with a 40 while Hayley Abell shot a 44. Amy Brown shot a 47 while Taylor Howard had a 54. Brianna Reynolds finished out the team's performance with a 55.

    From there, the week went downhill for the Lady Knights.

    Win district. Win region. To be the best we can be.

    Do you plan to play in college?

    No, but I plan on always playing the sport some way.

  • Knights improve in match play

    The Marion County High School boys' golf team improved to 4-0 in match play after a week of improvement.

    On Monday of last week, the Knights played host to Adair County, Campbellsville and Bardstown in a quad match at Rosewood.

    The Knights shot a season low 158 to beat Adair (163), Bardstown (165) and Campbellsville (174).

  • Fifth Annual Farmers National Bank Heart of Kentucky Tennis Open is Aug. 21-22

    The Fifth Annual Farmers National Bank Heart of Kentucky Tennis Open is Aug. 21-22 at Graham Memorial Park in Lebanon. The tournament is part of the Central Kentucky Tennis Series ("CKTS"). Although CKTS members are competing for points, anyone can enter the tournament.

  • 16 are indicted for drugs

    Last week, state and local law enforcement served sealed indictments against 16 individuals. The sealed indictments were originally filed July 19.

    All of the indictments involved drugs charges of some sort.

    They are as follows:

    - Timothy Buckler, 45, of 352 S. Woodlawn Avenue in Lebanon was indicted for first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance (second or subsequent offense) and first-degree persistent felony offender.

  • Man with local ties dies in single-vehicle crash

    A New Haven man died Tuesday of last week after a single-vehicle crash in LaRue County.

    According to LaRue County Deputy Marcus Jackson, Joseph David "Joe David" Ray Shoffner, 19, was driving near Lincoln Boyhood Home at Knob Creek about 4:20 p.m. when he lost control of the Chevrolet Blazer. The tires dropped off the right side of the roadway and Shoffner overcorrected. The vehicle went into a side skid and rolled three or four times.

    Shoffner, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected. LaRue County Fire Department responded also to the scene.

  • Raikes is crowned club champ

    After starting the day two strokes behind, T.J. Raikes shot a 71 on Sunday to beat Curt Manning by two strokes in the championship flight of the Lebanon Country Club club championship.

    Raikes shot 70 and 71 for a total of 141 to claim the club championship. Manning was close behind, shooting 68 and 75 for a 143.

    Defending champion Tommy Carrico took third place, shooting 72 and 74 for an overall 146.

    Adam Milby (71, 76) and Matthew Gribbins (73, 74) were close behind in fourth place with 147's.

  • Hagan heads up girls' soccer

    Bardstown native Hart Hagan will take the reins as the Marion County High School girls' soccer head coach this season.

    Hagan inherits a team that finished last season with five wins and 10 losses and a second round exit in the 29th District tournament.

    He replaces Neil Payne, who recently accepted a teaching and head coaching position at Montgomery County High School.
