  • City postpones decision on St. Catharine contract

    The Lebanon City Council on April 22 voted 5-1 to postpone a decision regarding a contract proposal from St. Catharine College regarding the school's possible use of the Centre Square Fine Arts Center (the former Lebanon High School).

    The proposal was approved by the Centre Square Foundation Board April 21.

    At the city council's special-called meeting April 22, Councilman Bill Pickerill said he wanted more time to look over the contract. Councilman Kenny Marrett said he had not received the revised contract prior to the meeting.

  • Convicted killer's death sentence reversed

    An opinion Thursday by Kentucky's Supreme Court reverses the 2005 death sentence of three-time convicted killer Michael St. Clair - a man blamed for at least four murders, including the 1990 execution of Marion County native Frank Brady, which occurred near Lebanon Junction, after he was kidnapped from a Sonora truck stop.

    According to Thursday's reversal, "the (Bullitt County) trial court's directive to follow the statutory language in instructing the jury on the applicable aggravator required to support a death sentence."

  • Letter-Roadblock for Diabetes

    Editor's note: This letter was inadvertently left out of the April 28 edition.

    It is that time of the year for the American Diabetes Association Step Out walk at Keeneland Race Course.

    As a fund-raiser in honor of our grandson, Parker Thomas, we will again be having a roadblock on Saturday, May 1, to raise money for our team, Scoop's Crew. In the past, the people of Marion County have been more than generous at our roadblock and we are asking for your help again.

  • Flash flood watch has been issued for the weekend

    The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for May 1-2.

    The weather service is predicting there will be several chances for showers and thunderstorms this weekend. Heavy rainfall could cause flooding issues throughout central Kentucky.

    Rainfall of one to two inches could occur Saturday, and Sunday's storm could bring rainfall of more than five inches in some areas.

  • At least 50 seek to replace Peterson

    The end of the Tim Peterson era at Marion County High School has produced a large amount of interest in the boy's basketball coaching position.

    As of Sunday night, Marion County High School athletic director Stacey Hall said he's been contacted by at least 50 applicants with letters of interest and resumes since Peterson's departure in late February.

    The list hasn't been narrowed down to contenders yet, according to Hall.

  • Lebanon Marketplace opening May 1

    The first Saturday in May is synonymous with the Kentucky Derby, but the Lebanon Marketplace (formerly the farmer's market) will also be getting out of the gates that day.

    Barbie Ballard, the coordinator for the Marketplace, reminded the community that the Marketplace pavilion is located on M.L. King Avenue, across the street from the Cardinal Den.

  • Lady Knights named All-State

    Heading into their sophomore and junior seasons, the expectations are only getting higher for Makayla Epps, Kyvin Goodin-Rogers and Bre Elder.

    All three were named All-State by one or both the Associated Press and The Courier-Journal's All-State teams.

    Epps was named first team All-State by the AP and The Courier-Journal. Kyvin Goodin-Rogers was named first team All-State by The Courier-Journal and second team All-State by The Associated Press. Bre Elder was named third team All-State by The Courier-Journal.

  • Fiscal court denies sheriff's request for additional deputy

    It was business as usual at the Marion County Fiscal Court meeting Thursday, April 15, until a request for an additional sheriff's deputy was discussed.

    At the end of the meeting, Magistrate John Arthur Elder III asked his fellow magistrates if they planned on discussing Marion County Sheriff Carroll Kirkland's request for an additional deputy. Elder made a motion to approve the request, however Magistrate Steve Masterson voiced some concerns. According to Masterson, when Kirkland submitted his budget a few months ago, an additional deputy position wasn't included.

  • Lack of budget is frustrating

    The General Assembly adjourned the 2010 General Assembly Session without finalizing a budget. It is a matter that has caused much frustration and even anger. People should be mad. The fact of the matter is that the Senate would not agree to a fiscally unsound budget proposed by the House that raised over $280 million in taxes and bonded over $1 billion in projects that we cannot afford.
