  • Lebanon City Council to meet Monday

    The Lebanon City Council is scheduled to meet in regular session at 7 p.m. Monday, April 12.

    Here are the items on the agenda:

    - Delegations from Mark Spalding regarding health insurance and Jeff Wooldridge, Marion County animal control officer.

    - Department reports

    - Consider approval of health insurance renewal

    - Consider approval of the construction of a resolution supporting the construction of home by Marion County Area Technology Center students.

  • Try some new sauces

    It's almost strawberry-picking time, which is a good excuse to try this great dipping sauce for strawberries.

    It's an adults-only sauce, as it contains bourbon, and quite delicious.

    Speaking of sauces, this Jezebel sauce is very easy to make, lasts forever in the frig and is great with grilled meat, egg rolls or (my favorite) cream cheese and crackers.

    And speaking of easy, I fixed country-style ribs in the crockpot the other day using just three ingredients. They were tender, sweet-spicy and scrumptious!

  • Chief deputy ready to lead sheriff's department

    Jimmy Clements has been the chief deputy for the Marion County Sheriff's Department since 1996. Now, he's ready to move into the main office.

    Clements is challenging incumbent Sheriff Carroll Kirkland in the May 18 primary election.

    Clements wrote in response to a questionnaire from the Enterprise that he wanted to run for sheriff when he felt he had the experience to do so.

    "I believe that time has come and I would like to put the knowledge I have gained to work by serving Marion County," he said.

  • Police officer heading to Afghanistan

    Lebanon Police Officer J.D. Holliday is reporting for duty in a different capacity this week.

    Holliday is also a specialist in the Army Reserves. He is deploying to Afghanistan with the 212th Transportation Company, which is based in Chattanooga, Tenn.

    Holliday previously served a tour of duty in Iraq. This time will be a little tougher, he said, because he will be leaving behind his wife, Laura, and their daughters, Cathy, 3, and Natalie, 2.

  • Sheriff shooting for another term

    Carroll Kirkland has been the sheriff since 1996, and he would like Marion County voters to help him maintain that position for another four years.

    Kirkland is being challenged in the May 18 primary by Chief Deputy Jimmy Clements.

    Kirkland is seeking re-election because he appreciates the opportunity to serve the community, he wrote in response to a questionnaire sent by the Enterprise.

  • Senate offers responsible budget

    As many of you have heard or read, issues around the state's budget have not yet been resolved. The primary problem is that the Senate and the House Republicans are unwilling to issue $1.2 billion in additional debt and raise an additional $280 million in taxes. We are simply not in a position to increase our debt load.

  • Mattingly is appointed to school board

    Brad Mattingly of Lebanon was appointed to the Marion County Board of Education last week.

    Mattingly was one of six applicants that applied for the vacant board seat, which was left open when former school board member Joe Mattingly resigned. Mattingly was forced to resign after his daughter, Christina L. McRay, was hired as the assistant principal at Marion County High School. Under KRS 160.180, individuals who have a relative working for the school district may not serve on the school board.

  • Take one: SCC and Centre Square

    Last week, the cast of "Dearly Beloved" rehearsed in Angelic Hall at the Centre Square Fine Arts Building (the former Lebanon High School).

    The play is being performed twice this weekend by the St. Catharine College Players, but if everything goes according to plan, it could become the first of a series of artistic and educational opportunities that may soon be available in Marion County.

  • Deep roots

    Never say never.

    That's a valuable lesson Rick Goodin learned years ago after saying that he would never come back to live in his hometown of Lebanon or work at his family's business - Lebanon Oak Flooring.

    But, as Goodin can attest, sometimes it's good to be wrong.

    It's apparently paid off for Goodin, who was recently named Outstanding Businessperson by the Lebanon-Marion County Chamber of Commerce.

  • Warning: Robots are coming

    I joke with my friends that the robot wars are coming. The only thing is: part of me is only half-joking (I think). It probably didn't help that I saw "iRobot" (in its entirety) for the first time this past weekend.

    Why am I concerned this week?

    No, it's not the release of the iPad, although that doesn't help. (Wireless technology will just make it easier for the machines to communicate with each other.)

    My concern starts with soccer and ends in space.
