  • Knights fall to Russell, Taylor County

    The Marion County Knights baseball team closed out the regular season with a 15-13 record after falling 4-3 to Fourth Region power Russell County on Wednesday at Dave Hourigan Field.

    Russell County entered the game as the Fourth Region's best team and the reigning region champion.

    "In actuality, you never want to say any loss is a good loss. But this loss if you told me before the day started that would have fought like we did I would have said that's not too bad of a loss," Knights Head Coach Chad Spalding said.

  • Lady Knights prep for district

    The Marion County High School softball team improved to 18-12 on the season after winning two games and dropping four last week.

    The Lady Knights set their sights on Adair County for Monday's first round 20th District game at Campbellsville. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m.

    "We have split two games this year with them. It should be a very good game," Lady Knights Head Coach Trent Milby said. "We can't make mistakes and we must put the ball in play to beat them. They have a very good pitcher but so do we. It should be a very interesting game."

  • Try these recipes with flour tortillas

    When I was growing up, I never ate spinach, but now I love it. Fresh spinach, that is, not the canned stuff.

    I usually plant two or three big flowerpots with spinach and lettuce every year and put them on my front porch (away from rabbits.) I get plenty for myself, to use in salads and cooked dishes.

    I was experimenting the other night and ended up making some delicious enchiladas with a little bit of leftover chicken, spinach and a big Vidalia onion. Yum!

    Marion County, the community I have called home for almost 31 years, has truly become a beautiful mosaic. And it seems fitting that I saw a portion of that "mosaic" during a visit to "Arts and Humanities Day" at A.C. Glasscock Elementary School last week.

    Shooting incident occurs at Cardinal Den

    A Bardstown man was arrested May 9 for his involvement in a shooting incident that took place at The Cardinal Den.

    According to Kentucky State Police, at 1:18 a.m., KSP Trooper Brian Coyt responded to The Cardinal Den after receiving a complaint of shots being fired. The Lebanon Police Department and Marion County Sheriff's Department also responded.

  • Soaked, but still growing

    The morning of May 3, Donnie Veatch said his wife asked him how high the water got after the May 2 flooding.

    "She looked out the window and said, 'It's right here,'" Veatch said.

    Veatch, 48, had seen flooding before, but he'd never seen the water get as high as it did in the aftermath of the rains of May 1 and 2.

  • Spalding and company are staying

    After resigning last week, Marion County High School Baseball Head Coach Chad Spalding has rescinded his resignation and will continue to coach next season.

    Spalding and assistant coaches Marc Brock and Will Knight handed in their resignations on Monday of last week.

    On Tuesday of last week at the school board meeting, the minutes were recorded that the contracts of those coaches were not renewed, implying that they were fired.

  • Knights hit a hot streak

    Despite a tumultuous two weeks off the field, the Marion County High School baseball team won three of four games against region competition last week during a home stand at Hourigan Field. The Knights improved their record to 15-12 overall.

    Junior Paul Spalding had a hot bat again last week as he hit two home runs in four games, both in the bottom of the sixth to change the outcome of the game.

    The Knights also bid farewell to the team's lone senior, Joseph Lewis, on Saturday during Senior Day festivities.

  • Bradfordsville has third fire on same block

    Three times since April 22, the Bradfordsville Fire Department has responded to house fires on Riverview Drive in Bradfordsville.

    The most recent fire occurred at approximately 7 a.m. Saturday, May 15, at 405 Riverview Drive. Arson is suspected.

    "One of the neighbors spotted it and alerted the fire department," said Joe Pat Kirkland, the assistant chief of the Bradfordsville Fire Department.

    The department was able to respond quickly, limiting the damage to an enclosed back porch and the kitchen area of the house, Kirkland said.

  • Track Knights compete in Bardstown

    In their only meet last week, the Marion County High School track team finished third in the boy's competition and fourth in the girl's competition at the Bardstown High School All-Comers meet.

    The girl's team finished fourth with 73 points behind Bardstown (204), Nelson County (133) and Jeffersontown (98).

    The boy's team finished third with 119 points behind Bardstown (203) and Nelson County (127).
