  • Giving hearts

    The window in the front hallway of Lebanon Middle School is covered with paper chains. Each chain contains a sentiment, a prayer or a wish for the well-being for the Haitian people.

    In light of the massive earthquake that hit Haiti in January, the LMS STLP and BETA clubs proposed selling the paper chains for a quarter each, according to Bethany Purdom, a student at LMS. Every quarter raised went toward the purchase of healthy mixes of rice and vegetables that could provide six meals per bag.

  • Head of the class

    "You'll make a good substitute, but not a good teacher."

    Those words from her college advisor almost made Coury Leathers Osbourne give up on her dream of becoming a teacher, a dream that began at a very early age. Being raised in a family that put a strong emphasis on education and being surrounded by educators, including her father Freddie Leathers, it seemed natural for her to pursue teaching.

    But those words nearly sidetracked her during her senior year at Bellarmine University.

  • Faithful, fighter

    Toward the end of Sunday's Black History Celebration, Jerry Evans addressed the audience.

    "We've lost a fighter in the person of Verda Calhoun," he said.

    It was a simple, but significant statement about Calhoun, who died Thursday evening, Feb. 25, after decades of working to improve her community. She was 74.

    Calhoun served as president of the local chapter of the NAACP for 22 years until her death.

    She was a person who worked hard and wanted things done right and done well, according to those who knew her.

  • Peterson fired as boy's basketball coach

    After swirling rumors for at least the last two seasons, Marion County High School administrators fired Tim Peterson as the boy's basketball head coach on Friday.

    Peterson, who has been under heavy scrutiny over several seasons, wasn't shocked at the decision.

    "I had a feeling back in the middle of January. Things weren't going well and we couldn't pull out of our skid," Peterson said. "From then on out I was just trying to turn it around."

  • Council discusses facilities plan

    Engineers from CDP Engineers spoke with the Lebanon City Council during its special-called meeting Monday night about the city's facilities plan.

    Cities are required to update their plans at a minimum of once every 20 years, according to Ken Roseman of CDP. The City of Lebanon last completed a facilities plan in 1994.

  • He's a good man, DENNIS BROWN

    What has Brown done for you? Quite a bit if you are a student in Marion County.

    Dennis Brown has helped local sports programs, worked to improve the equipment available to local technical school students, and generally been an active member of the community.

    It's those contributions, above and beyond his duties as TG Kentucky's general manager general administration division that led the Lebanon-Marion County Chamber of Commerce to make Brown the first winner of its newest award, Outstanding Industry Manager.
