  • Police investigating murder attempt

    The Lebanon Police are investigating an attempted murder that took place Christmas Day.

    According to the police report, Justin L. Edlen of Olympia Drive in Bardstown was shot at 43 Maple Street Apartments. He was taken to Spring View Hospital where he was treated for gunshot wounds to his upper abdomen and right arm. He was transported to the hospital by Marion County EMS.

    Edlen was transferred to University Hospital in Louisville where he was listed in stable condition Thursday of last week.

  • My two cents on Sen. Higdon's survey

    Jimmy Higdon made a habit of providing a survey to his constituents each year he served in the Kentucky House of Representatives. This year, Higdon is heading back to Frankfort as the newest state senator in the General Assembly, but he has continued his practice of seeking input from citizens.

    This week's edition of the Enterprise includes his survey (which also begins on this page). I took some time over the weekend to answer the questions myself.

  • Lady Knights prepare for Drake & Co.

    There is no love lost in the Marion County and Nelson County lady hoops rivalry.

    "Pretty much they don't like us and we don't like them," Lady Knights Head Coach Trent Milby said about the rivalry.

    Since Nelson County star senior Samantha Drake was a freshman, the Cards and the Lady Knights have played seven times. Marion County has won four of those games - two at home, one at Nelson County and one on a neutral site.

    Drake and her supporting cast look to even up the series on Friday night at Nelson County High School.

  • Small Knights face physical task

    These small, quick Knights face a big task this week with carbon copy opponents coming up.

    Nelson County (6-5) and Boyle County (8-3) are big, bruising teams that play an opposite style of the Knights.

  • Budget will be legislators priority

    The state budget forecast is gloomy, no matter who you ask.

    The Consensus Forecasting Group is projecting a budget shortfall of $900 million during the next two years, and that's the optimistic view.

    Gov. Steve Beshear told legislative leaders last week that the CFG's forecast did not include some expenses, such as retirement contributions, increasing health insurance costs and prison population growth. As a result, the Governor's office is anticipating a shortfall closer to $1.5 billion.

  • Room to grow

    On New Year's Eve, several of the consumers at Marion County Industries stood in front of a television, trying their best to mimic the movements they were seeing on the screen. Richard Simmons' voice offered words of encouragement and support as they completed their exercise routine.

    With the new year comes new challenges for everyone involved with Marion County Industries, which has provided men and women with developmental disabilities a place to come together, work and earn a paycheck for three decades.

  • County accepting 'live' Christmas trees

    Citizens who need to dispose of "live" Christmas trees can take them to the county transfer station on Fairground Road.

    The transfer station is open from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and the second Saturday of the month (Jan. 9).

    Marion County Judge/Executive John G. Mattingly wrote that trees have typically been found on road sides, at pull-offs, in creeks and around the county.

    "The litter disposal method is unacceptable and usually attracts or draws more garbage to these points of deposit," Mattingly wrote.

  • Do or don't do the Dew

    Diet Crack.

    That's what I call Diet Mountain Dew - my beverage of choice.

    Why you ask? Well, because the drink is so addicting it's like crack. Now, by saying that I am by no means making light of an addiction to crack, or any other drug for that matter. My point is that Diet Mountain Dew is literally like a drug to me. I have to have it! If not, I get migraines, become very irritable and... well... I don't know what else because I have never gone but just a few hours without one.

    Despite consecutive tough losses, the Knights can't be disappointed.

    The Knights have already improved upon last season's 8-22 season and have jumped out to a 9-5 record. After losing one of their top three players in Chuck Elder for the season, preseason predictions looked bleak for the Knights.
