  • Curtis-Maruyasu to invest $11 million in Lebanon plant

    Marion County Economic Development Director Tom Lund stood before scores of employees and local officials Thursday at the Curtis Maruyasu American plant in Lebanon. He was preparing to introduce Gov. Steve Beshear, but Lund had a few comments of his own first.

    "This is a red letter day for the City of Lebanon and the Commonwealth of Kentucky," he said.

  • Tourism commission approves spending $10,500 for Christmas lights

    Monday, the Lebanon Tourist and Convention Commission debated but eventually approved spending up to $10,500 for Christmas lights for Main Street. Councilman Kenny Marrett spoke to the commission with the idea after requesting the concurrence of the Lebanon City Council to do so.

    The commission voted 6-1 to approve the purchase. Commissioners Carlotta Brussell, Nancy Higdon, Dan Lawson, Eddie Lee, Tom Lund and Jim Richardson voted in favor of the purchase.

  • MLK March is Sunday

    The United Concerned Citizens Organization will be holding its annual Martin Luther King March this Sunday, Jan. 17.

    The march will begin at 3 p.m. at the Lebanon Post Office.

    The march will conclude at the Marion County Public Library, where refreshments will be available.

  • Ready for anything

    The 2009 ice storm was, to say the least, an unpleasant experience.

    Many people had their electricity knocked out for hours, days and, for a few, weeks at a time.

    The storm limited how information could be communicated, knocking out the local radio and television broadcasting abilities.

    And the storm damaged our water supply, and for a short time, no running water was available in the county.

  • Doggone it, keep your pets warm

    Let me start this column by saying that I, by no means, am a perfect pet owner.

    I don't give my pets their vaccines exactly when I'm supposed to. I don't give my dog baths as often as I should. I don't brush my cats regularly (my mom does, however). And, I'm sad to admit it, but I don't play with my pets as often as I should. Believe me, I feel horrible about that last one. In fact, just writing it makes me feel ashamed. But, like I said, I'm not a perfect pet owner.

  • Manning places in top 10 in state Junior Miss pageant

    Michelle Manning, the 2010 Marion County Junior Miss, finished in the top 10 of Kentucky's Junior Miss pageant, which was held Jan. 15-16.

    Manning also received the Friendship Award during the state competition.

    Manning won the Marion County pageant in August. In the local pageant, she received awards in all five categories — fitness, interview, preliminary scholarship, self-expression and talent.

    She is the daughter of Curt and Judy Manning.

  • Finding the next police chief

    Lebanon Police Chief Shelton Young will be retiring. His last day as the police chief will be Jan. 31.

    With that in mind, Councilman Bill Pickerill asked what the process will be to find the next chief during the Lebanon City Council's regular monthly meeting Monday evening.

    Mayor Gary Crenshaw said he will post the vacancy at the police department and he will advertise the vacancy publicly.

    Pickerill asked if there was a law enforcement magazine where it could be advertised. Crenshaw said there are "all types" of publications.

  • Ready for a storm?

    Almost a year ago, an ice storm swept through Marion and 92 other counties in Kentucky. The storm created power outages and a temporary water shortage.

    To stay ready in the event of another storm, local residents should heed the Boy Scouts motto and be prepared, according to Gary Luce, an active member of Marion County's emergency services.

    Luce is a captain on the Marion County Rescue Squad, the county coordinator for search and rescue operations and a paramedic instructor for Marion County EMS.
