  • Special Election set for Feb. 2

    Monday, Dec. 28, Gov. Steve Beshear issued a writ of election to fill the vacant 24th District seat in the Kentucky House of Representatives. The district includes Casey and Marion counties and a portion of Pulaski County.

    The seat became vacant when Jimmy Higdon resigned from the House after he was elected to fill the vacant 14th District state senate seat.

    The special election will be held Feb. 2, 2010.

  • Living without insurance

    I am frequently instructed as I enter the room to see a new patient, "Be easy on me, Doc. I don't have health insurance." To which I reply, "Neither do I ... not for 15 years."

    Then the conversation turns this way, "How do you do it? Aren't you afraid? What if? What if? What if?"

    Honestly, this is where I live and how I live and here are some of my conclusions. Insurance is based on fear - my faith and my instincts tell me that there is only one appropriate fear - fear of God.

  • Fix some potato pancakes in honor of Hanukkah

    It's time for a special Hanukkah treat that I love at any time of the year - potato pancakes (latkes).

    I've tried lots of recipes and my very favorite is the one from the Junior's Restaurant cookbook.

    Every recipe I've tried from this cookbook has been terrific. I hope to go to Brooklyn some day and eat at the restaurant.

    Their potato pancakes are out of this world, and the extra blanching step eliminates the problem of the grated potatoes turning brown before you can cook them.

    Try these.

  • Lady Knights off to a hot start

    An undefeated start is not new for the Marion County High School girls basketball team. Knocking off two top 25 teams by an average of 28 points, however, is something to get excited about.

    Off to their best start since 2007, the Lady Knights (4-0) are working at a high level already for this point in the season. On Saturday, the Lady Knights knocked off Casey County, a Sweet 16 team from a year ago, by 38 points on a neutral floor.

    "We played really good defense. They were clicking (Saturday)," Head Coach Trent Milby said.

  • Marion County native to become next bishop of Owensboro

    The Rev. Bill Medley, a Loretto native, has been designated to become the next Bishop of Owensboro.

    The Diocese of Owensboro issued a press statement Dec. 15 announcing Medle'sy appointment by Pope Benedict XVI.

    Medley, 57, is the son of Dorothy C. Hayden Medley and the late James Werner Medley. He was baptized at St. Francis of Assisi Church in St. Francis.

    Medley was ordained as a priest in 1982. He has worked in numerous parishes during the past 27 years, most recently as the pastor of St. Bernadette in Prospect.
