  • Munch away on some homemade granola

    One of the basic rules of life is "don't go to the grocery store when you're hungry."

    Everybody knows that. Right?

    I certainly know it and I try to follow that rule, but every once in awhile, I accidentally end up stopping at the store when I haven't had supper yet.

    When I do that, I find myself buying something I certainly don't need like Krispy Kreme doughnuts, candy or Krunch 'n Munch. Did you know it is possible to eat an entire box of that stuff in the time it takes to drive from Loretto Foodland to the caution light in St. Francis?

  • Knights face busy week

    If the weather permits the Marion County Knights will have a flurry of games to finish out the regular season.

    A game scheduled against East Jessamine on Monday will be moved to Wednesday night if the original date is rescheduled.

    East Jessamine (12-13) played in the Mordecai's Holiday Homecoming Classic this year. They have played several mutual opponents and usually fared the same as Marion County.

  • Little Fighter

    Lexi Derringer is only 3 years old, but she is one tough cookie.

    From the day she was born prematurely at 29 weeks, she has been fighting to live. She spent the first two months of her life at Kosair Hospital, and she's there again. Only this time, she has cancer.

    She was diagnosed with Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) on Friday, Nov. 13. Friday the 13th is widely known as an unlucky day, but for Lexi's parents, Kevin and Christy Derringer, that day was a nightmare.

  • Special city council meeting tonight, Feb. 22

    The Lebanon City Council is scheduled to meet in special session at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22.

    The agenda for the meeting includes the following items:

     

    - Facilities Plan Update Presentation by CDP Engineers

     

    - State’s economic incentive program discussion presented by Tom Lund, Economic Development

     

    - Council Concurrence to Advertise for a Police Officer

     

    - Council Concurrence of the Mayor’s Appointment of Jerry Evans to the Human Rights Commission

  • Fiscal court meets Thursday, Feb. 18

    The Marion County Fiscal Court is scheduled to meet in regular session at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18.

    The following items are on the agenda:

    - To consider a change in the contribution schedule for HRA/EBA member benefits

    - To consider escrow and disbursement agreement with the Marion County Board of Education regarding LGEA funds

    - To consider a renewal of the county's policy with Delta Dental

    - To consider amendments to the 2009-10 budget

    - To consider a memorandum of understanding regarding a 2010 ambulance service grant

  • No school Wednesday, Feb. 17

    Marion County Public Schools will be closed, Wednesday, Feb. 17, because of winter weather and dangerous road conditions.

    The National Weather Service is forecasting a 40 percent chance of snow showers Tuesday evening with a low around 22 degrees and wind between 9 and 13 miles per hour.

    For Wednesday, the weather service is predicting similar conditions with a 20 percent chance of snow showers. Wednesday night, the low is predicted to be around 21 degrees with winds between 7 and 10 miles per hour.

  • Government transparency bill moves forward

    The Senate pushed for government transparency, expanded voter participation, and the protection of private property. I attended the Rally for Life at the Capitol on Wednesday where I spoke to 200 people gathered there to celebrate the sanctity of life. I also spoke at the United 874K Coalition rally which promoted services for the disabled. One of my personal highlights during every session is the Right to Life Rally. Ever since I came to Frankfort as a state representative and now as a senator, I have supported pro-life legislation.

  • Melt-down Marion County registration is this month

    Anyone interested in losing weight and making lifestyle changes is invited to sign up for Melt-Down Marion County.

    Registration will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, at the Marion County Extension Office.

    Weekly sessions will be held each Thursday from March 4 through April 22. Weigh-ins will begin at 5 p.m. and programs will start at 5:30 p.m.

  • Make Won-Tons from left-over chicken

    If you like egg rolls, you're sure to love these Chicken Won-Tons. They are easy to make and are a great way to use up just a little bit of leftover chicken.

    After you taste them, you'll see why they're habit-forming.

    You can serve them with a store-bought sweet and sour sauce, or maybe a hot Chinese mustard, but I love this easy peanut sauce for dipping.
