  • Fiscal court scheduled to meet Thursday

    The Marion County Fiscal Court is scheduled to meet in regular session at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4.

    The agenda for the meeting includes the following:

    - The annual report of the Marion County Office of Economic Development

    - An overview of the hazard mitigation plan update with Pam Bowling of the Lincoln Trail Area Development District.

    - Consider renewal of the county's dental plan.

    - A presentation and request by Marion County 4-H Shooting Sports Club members.

  • Short on ideas: twitterize them

    With too much on my mind and not enough space to write in depth about anything, I've decided to "twitterize" this column with a short comment or two on issues that have caught my eye in the past week.   Here goes (tweet, tweet):

    Gov. Beshear is running the VLT flag up the pole once again. Not even all the hot air in Frankfort is likely to get it blowing much, however.

    Tax reform is needed in this state, but that flag isn't getting any wind either during this legislative session.

  • Board excited with superintendent's progress

    Superintendent Donald Smith has been sitting at the helm of Marion County's school district for more than six months now, and according to the board of education that hired him, he's made a great deal of progress.

    Last week, the board and Smith sat down for Smith's mid-year evaluation. In the past, superintendent evaluations have been done in closed session but that changed in 2008 after the attorney general ruled that such evaluations must be public, except when they might lead to discipline or dismissal.

  • Knights take on Nelson, E'town

    The Knights look for their first win of the calendar year this weekend.

    Friday night the Nelson County Cardinals (9-7) come to town for a junior varsity/varsity double-header against the Marion County High School boy's basketball team. Junior varsity tips off at 6 p.m., the varsity tips off at 7:30 p.m. at the Roby Dome.

  • County changes pricing for dead animal removal

    The Marion County Fiscal Court unanimously approved a change to the county's fee for dead animal removal during its Jan. 21 meeting.

    Under the new policy, the county will charge $20 to visit a site and remove one animal. The county will also be charging $10 for each additional animal it picks up during the same visit.

    Marion County started providing dead animal removal on its own last year. Previously, the county had paid Nation Brothers to provide the service, but Nation Brothers ceased the service in several counties because its expenses increased.

  • Role model

    At three hours or more a day, gymnastics practice is quite the investment.

    So far that investment has paid a handsome sum for Marion County High School junior Taura Miles.

    Miles is a gymnast who trains at Fit Kids in Bardstown with owner Vicki Smith and her staff. Miles has been training since she was seven. She's now 16.

    Smith is no stranger to gymnastics, having owned Fit Kids for 28 years and having extensive experience as a coach. So when Smith speaks about gymnastics, you tend to listen.

  • January woes continue

    Someone needs to check the temperature inside the Roby Dome because it seems much colder than usual.

    The Marion County High School boy's basketball team has gone cold from the field, extending their losing streak to seven games. They are winless in the month of January. In the last two January's, they are 0-13. The Knights have two more chances to claim a win in January (Nelson County, Elizabethtown).
