  • Second MAC escapee has been caught

    John K. Francis, an inmate who walked away from Marion Adjustment Center last week, was apprehended at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26.

    Francis and another inmate Brian Wyatt were found to be missing Jan. 17. Wyatt was recaptured Jan. 20 in Nelson County.

    Francis was caught in Mercer County by the Mercer County Sherriff's Department. He is being housed in the Marion County Detention Center.

  • One of the MAC escapees has been caught

    Inmate Brian Wyatt walked away from Marion Adjustment Center Sunday, Jan. 17. He was recaptured at 3:10 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21.

    Wyatt was apprehended by the Nelson County Sheriff's Department, and he is being held in the Nelson County Jail.

    He was serving a 10-year sentence for engaging in organized crime-criminal syndicate and two counts of first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance (methamphetamines). His parole board date was scheduled for June 14, 2011.

  • Aquaknights dominate

    The Marion County Aquaknights swim team hosted a meet with Campbellsville and Taylor County High Schools at the Lebanon Aquatic Center Thursday.

    Marion County scored 136 points and Taylor County received 16 points while Campbellsville failed to score. First place finishers receive six points in relay events and four points in individual events. Second place finishers receive three points and third place receive one point in both types of events. Marion County received 1st place in 20 out of 21 events.

  • Political 'newcomer' has followed the issues

    Terry Mills spent 35 years working for the Social Security Administration, and now he hopes to serve the public in another capacity.

    Mills is the Democratic candidate in the Feb. 2 special election to fill the vacant state representative's seat for the 24th District, which includes Casey and Marion counties and part of Pulaski County.

  • Lady Knights knock off CAL

    They're number one. And they've earned it.

    This week included two "business as usual" wins in district play for the Marion County High School girl's basketball team and a signature victory over Christian Academy of Louisville. Here's a look at last week's results.

    Marion County 54, Christian Academy-Louisville 51

    In a highly touted match up of two of the state's best teams, Marion County emerged the winner and just solidified their number one ranking by winning at the Raatz Fence Classic at Mercy Academy in Louisville.

  • Lady Knights prepare for Hart County

    Monday night the Lady Knights head into a region battle at the site of this year's Fifth Region tournament, a place they plan to get really acquainted with come March.

    Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m. when the Lady Knights visit Hart County (13-7) on Monday.

    "They'll run up and down," Lady Knights Head Coach Trent Milby said. "They're not as fast as we are but they can shoot the basketball. That's where the region tournament is at and we want to get a good feeling for the gym. We hope to play well, it's always a tough place to play."

  • Living long, living well

    Richard Smalley hasn't done too much traveling in the 96 years he's been alive, but he has done a lot of living in that time.

    "I haven't rode no plane. I haven't rode no motorcycle," he said. "But I have rode mules."

    Smalley was born March 24, 1913, to William Henry and Mae (Clark) Smalley in Marion County.

  • MCHS hires new assistant principal, board member forced to resign

    Marion County High School has a new assistant principal but the district has lost a school board member.

    This all comes after the Marion County High School's Site-based Decision Making Council held a special called meeting last week and unanimously voted to hire Christina L. McRay to fill the school's vacant assistant principal position, which was left open when Tammy Newcome resigned and accepted an interim principal's position at Boston Elementary in Nelson County.

    McRay is the daughter of School Board Member Joe F. Mattingly.

  • Special contest going to the dogs

    Just Paws, Inc., is organizing a new contest that is for a good cause and could be a lot of doggone fun.

    The design contest, called Barkitecture, will invite local amateurs and professionals to create a functional outdoor doghouse. Just Paws invites individuals, groups or companies, to showcase their creative talents. The winner will receive an award. The houses will be on display at the Lebanon-Marion County Chamber of Commerce's Farm, Home and Garden Show April 3. The winners will be announced Sunday April 4 on stage at the show.

  • More candidates have filed for the primary

    Democrat Terry Mills and Republican Leo Johnson will be squaring off Tuesday, Feb. 2, in a special election to decide who will serve as the 24th District state representative during the 2010 General Assembly.

    But there will be at least one more candidate in the mix when the May 18 primary election is held. Bill Pickerill has filed to run in the Republican primary.
