  • Twenty-five years of Relay for Life

    This year, Relay for Life is celebrating its 25th anniversary nationwide! As many of you know, Relay for Life is one of the most unifying events that the American Cancer Society has to offer. Communities gather each year to join efforts and raise funds to support the American Cancer Society's mission of fighting cancer through research, education, advocacy and patient services.

    It is for many reasons that hundreds of volunteers participate in Relay for Life each year. For some, they walk proud of the fact that they, themselves, have conquered cancer!

  • Breaking news: Robbery in Washington County

    (Springfield, KY) – At 1:10 EDT, The Kentucky State Police responded to a residential burglary in the Smith Lane area of Washington County. The possible suspect vehicle is a dark colored, Ford F150 crew cab occupied by one black male and two white males, last seen headed north on KY 429 (Saint Rose Rd.) in Washington County.  The occupants of this vehicle should be considered armed and dangerous.

  • 'The Unpredictables' lose to Campbellsville

    True to form, the team dubbed "The Unpredictables" performed just as their nickname indicated on Tuesday of last week at Hourigan Field.

    The Marion County High School baseball team took a 13-3 drubbing by Campbellsville High School in the first round of the 20th District tournament to finish the season 14-12.

    The Knights split the season series with the Eagles, with each team winning on the road.

  • Lancers crack century mark in win

    The Lebanon Lancers used a barrage of three-pointers to take an early lead, then hung on to defeat the visiting River City Gamblers, 103-89.

    The Lancers held off a pair of runs by the Gamblers in the win.

    "Basketball's a game of runs," Lancers Coach Mark Bell said. "It's who can withstand the runs."

    The Lancers built a 12-point lead in the first quarter by hitting six three-pointers in the opening period.

    Elton Scott led Lebanon with 24 points, including four three-pointers.

  • Tennis wins region for first time since '82

    The Marion County High School boys tennis team may have been overlooked when it came time to seed the region tournament in Elizabethtown. That didn't bother the Knights as they raised eyebrows all week against the region's elite, eventually winning the region title and earning a team trip to the state tournament.

    It was the first time the boys tennis team had accomplished such a feat in 27 years. The last time came in 1982, with a team led by Brad Hanks.

  • Knights' win a pair of matches at state tournament

    The Marion County boys’ tennis team made some racket at the 2009 state tennis tournament. Coach Beverly Thomas said she had hoped that both of the Knights' doubles teams would get out of the first round.

    And they did.

    Senior Trey Hamilton and junior Austin Spalding got Marion County's first win when they defeated junior Chase Carrico and sophomore Parker Whitehouse of Owensboro Catholic, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, May 20 at the Sayre athletic complex.

    "The maturity level of Austin and Trey helped them in that match," Thomas said.

  • Means takes third in shot put

    Marion County senior Chris Means ended the 2009 track season with the best performance of his career.

    Means finished third in the shot put with a throw of 50 feet, 9.75 inches in the 2A state meet Friday at the University of Louisville.

    Not only was that Means' personal best, it was also a new Marion County High School record.

    "It may be a long time before we have anyone throw that far again," Marion County track coach Robby Peterson said.

    Junior Tyrell Williams of Calloway County won the 2A shot put with a throw of 51 feet, 9.25 inches.

  • New Hope man charged with attempted murder

    Johnny Lanham, 46, of New Hope has been charged with attempted murder and first-degree assault after he stabbed a New Haven man at Hawk's Place in Loretto May 24.

    According to Kentucky State Police, at approximately 12:23 a.m. Post 15 received a call of a stabbing at Hawk's Place. Lanham and William Bennington, 45, of New Haven were involved in a verbal altercation that escalated into a stabbing, police said. Lanham stabbed Bennington in the abdomen. Bennington was flown to University of Louisville Hospital for treatment.

  • Home run lifts Adair past Lady Knights

    Experience trumped all in the Marion County High School Lady Knights softball team's season ending defeat.

    Adair County High School senior Jessica Young stepped up and broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning by blasting a ball into centerfield. The ball topped the fence and bounced over.

    Centerfielder Tiffany Sapp's best efforts couldn't prevent the home run as she collided with the fence and lay on the field for several minutes before hopping up, cuts oozing blood down her leg.
