    A few thoughts from the past week:

    As if we needed another reminder that life doesn't always go according to our plans, we now have swine flu in the news.

    In recent years, we've dealt with mad cow and bird flu, and we've previously dealt with chicken and cow poxes.

    Maybe pigs were just late getting in on the act.

    - State and national health officials are urging people to be cautious with regard to swine flu.

  • Knights test their mettle at KOB

    The Marion County High School boys tennis team tested themselves against some of the state's toughest competition last weekend at the 209 Forcht Bank King of the Bluegrass Tennis Team Championships held at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Complex at the University of Louisville.

    "This was an exciting event for the team to participate in because of the caliber level of tennis play we knew we would face," Head Coach Beverly Thomas said.

    The second round of play had MCHS teamed with Highlands.

  • Girls tennis picks up steam

    The Marion County High School girls tennis team is picking up steam heading into conference tournament play.

    The Lady Knights beat Campbellsville 3-2 and Adair County 4-0 last week. They lost to Central Hardin 5-0.

    "We continue to do well against conference opponents," Lady Knights Head Coach Angela Holt said. "I was impressed with Kameron (Simmons) and Leanna (Begley) for their play in the Campbellsville match. Both girls managed to control the tempo of the match to favor their style."

  • Mayor Crenshaw home from hospital

    Lebanon Mayor Gary Crenshaw is at home and taking it easy after spending 10 days in Norton's Hospital in Louisville.

    Earlier this month, Crenshaw suffered a pulmonary embolism, which is a sudden blockage in a lung artery, and potentially very deadly.

    "I have a new lease on life," Crenshaw said Friday afternoon.

  • Next superintendent to speak Friday

    Donald Smith will be the guest speaker at the Marion County Industrial Foundation's First Friday Forum this Friday, May 1.

    Smith has been selected to become the next Marion County Public School superintendent. Smith will replace outgoing superintendent Roger Marcum.

    Smith will take over the position July 1.

    Smith's talk will be held at noon Friday on the third floor of the David Hourigan Government Administrative Building.

  • Oaks brunch canceled

    Maker's Mark has hosted a brunch at its distillery on Kentucky Oaks Day, but this year's event, which would have been held Friday, has been canceled.

    According to the "non-invite", Maker's Mark CEO Bill Samuels Jr. is suffering "post-traumatic hind-end discomfort" following the Kentucky General Assembly's decision to raise the tax on alcohol earlier this year.

    The state legislature approved a 6 percent sales tax increase on retail sales of alcoholic beverages. The new tax took effect April 1.

  • State police seeking murder suspect

    The Kentucky State Police are seeking Robert De Jesus Gomez on suspicion of murder.   Gomez is between 5'5" and 5'8" and has black hair and brown eyes.   He was involved in an altercation with Jorge Gomez April 26.

  • Attention Chocoholicsee save this recipe

    I have a friend who gave up chocolate for Lent, so I wanted to make something chocolate and yummy for him after Easter.

    I came up with this Chocolate Surprise Cake, and it turned out even better than I thought it would.

    It's very easy, uses a jazzed-up cake mix and a few other ingredients to make a beautiful shiny cake with a cream cheesy chocolate chip center.

    It's quite rich as is, and icing is not really necessary, but you could add icing if you wanted to. Chocoholics take note: you should save this recipe. If you try it, you'll make it again and again. Enjoy!
