  • State leaders working to fight prescription drug problems

    When the General Assembly began the legislative session last month, there was already broad agreement on what the three biggest issues would be: Writing state government's budget, realigning legislative and Kentucky Supreme Court districts, and limiting if not stopping prescription drug abuse.
    Last week, the latter two took center stage.

  • 'Trust, but verify' saves lives, shrinks government

    Transparency not only makes government smaller, less costly and more responsive to its constituents. It saves lives, too.
    The downside: It can embarrass government agencies and the bureaucrats who run them.  
    But ask me if I care more about assisting efforts by the Cabinet for Health and Family Services - which is shut up tighter than a pair of vise grips - to save face or finding out what really happened to Amy Dye, a 9-year-old Western Kentucky girl.

    Eastern Kentucky University recognized 884 graduates at the conclusion of the Fall 2011 semester.
    Local EKU graduates honored during commencement ceremonies on Dec. 18 include:
    Blake Marie Henderson of Gravel Switch (bachelor’s of science in agriculture), Jason Lyle Cornish of Lebanon (bachelor’s of science in criminal justice), Kimberly Nicole Yankey (general studies in business and technology) and Loren F. Taylor of Lebanon (wildlife management).

  • BCTC dean’s list announced

    Bluegrass Community & Technical College is proud to recognize the following students from Marion County who have achieved dean’s list honors for the 2011 fall semester. The college recognizes academic excellence by naming to the dean’s list full-time students who have earned an overall semester grade point average of 3.5 or better in courses numbered 100 or above.
