  • YOUR MONEY AT WORK: Marion County Soil Conservation District - For farm and home alike

    Editor’s note: This is the third story in a series about the seven special districts serving Marion County, as identified by the State Auditor’s Office as part of an effort to increase public awareness of how their money is spent. The Enterprise is taking a closer looking at the special districts that serve Marion County, how they are funded, and what they do for the community.

  • Power of the Cross

    Stewart’s Creek Baptist Church presented a crucifixion drama, “The Power of the Cross,” on Friday, March 29, and Saturday, March 30. The drama illustrated the events described in the Gospels about Jesus final hours on the cross.

  • Truth and Consequences: The Choice is Yours event is April 16

    All parents and community members are invited to the upcoming “Truth and Consequences: The Choice is Yours” event. Truth and Consequences is a program designed to show students the consequences of using drugs and alcohol by using role-play scenarios related to substance abuse. The Marion County Heartland Safe Community Coalition is sponsoring the event.

  • Kentucky earns high marks in transparency of government spending

    FRANKFORT – Kentucky is once again rated as one of the best states for transparency and public accountability by a new national report.
    Kentucky received an A- for its transparency website, www.opendoor.ky.gov, which allows citizens to review state government spending. Kentucky is considered one of seven top states in transparency, according to the newly released report: Following the Money 2013: How the States Rank on Providing Online Access to Government Spending Data.

  • Epps is Miss Basketball

    Makayla Epps is the 2013 Miss Basketball for the state of Kentucky.

    The award caps a stellar senior season for the Marion County Lady Knight.

    Epps surpassed the 3,000-point mark in her career, was named the Most Valuable Player in the 2013 Girls Sweet 16, and led her team to the state title.

    She was also named the first McDonald's All American in Marion County history.

    It's worth noting that Epps' teammate, Kyvin Goodin-Rogers, was also a finalist for the Miss Basketball award.

  • Musician in the making

    The first time Paul Childers picked up a guitar he knew he wanted to pursue a career in music.
    “I had a euphoric moment,” Childers said. “I knew I wanted to do this and nothing else.“
    At only 12 years of age, Childers began to pursue his passion. With the help of a local musician, Brad Lanham, Childers learned the basics.

  • The success of LMS

    “Expect success at LMS.”
    That’s the slogan at Lebanon Middle School, but it’s not just words on paper.
    The administration, staff and students have put the slogan into action and it’s paying off.
    LMS was recently named one of the 2013 Kentucky Schools to Watch. There are currently only 13 schools statewide and 400 schools nationally that have achieved this honor. It puts LMS in an elite group of schools that have proven to be “academically excellent.”

  • County offices, services affected by Easter weekend

    Marion County residents should be aware of schedule changes affecting county services during the Easter weekend.

    The county road department will be on a shortened work schedule on Friday, March 29, which is Good Friday. As soon as the garbage routes are completed Friday, that department will close for the day.

    As a result, county residents on the Friday route are encouraged to put their trash out earlier than usual.

  • The gang’s all SHEARED

    When Shawn Medley arrived at the St. Augustine School on Saturday, his hair cascaded down his back to his waist. By the time he left, his head was barren (including his beard).
    After his haircut his head felt about 10 pounds lighter.
    “There was a lot there,” Medley said.
    He said his hair hadn’t been that short probably since he was born. Medley had been growing his hair for three and a half years. He made a pair of massive donations to Locks of Love before the rest of his head was cleaned as part of the 2013 St. Baldrick’s event.
