  • New ag agent is familiar with local farmers

The newest face in the Marion County Extension Office isn't completely new to the community.

David Kessler, 55, of Washington County has been named the new Marion County extension agent for agriculture and natural resources. Kessler hit the ground running on Friday morning, his first day on the job, by assisting local farmers unloading cattle in preparation for a sale over the weekend.

"I enjoy helping people do the best that they can," he said.

  • Tobacco barn, trails and a taste of Kentucky

David Neville takes you inside an old tobacco barn that is now decorated like a banquet hall. He points out wooden tables and furniture are made from trees found elsewhere on the property.

He'll ask you to close your eyes and imagine the scene: A local musician sings for the guests as the smell of barbecue and fresh produce fill the hall. The diners wash down their meal with locally produced wine and for dessert, they eat cobbler made with blackberries picked on the farm.

Supporters of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, as well as members of the Sisters of Loretto, lined the sidewalks on North Fifth Street and West Stephen Foster Avenue May 29 to show their disapproval of the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (VCDF).

  • Unwelcome guest

Marion County's social host ordinance has been on the books for nearly four years and in that time not one person has been cited for violating the law. Nevertheless, local officials and supporters of the law believe it is making a difference.

Marion County Sheriff Jimmy Clements said he thinks the community's tolerance for underage drinking has gone down, but he believes the social host ordinance also serves as a deterrent.

  • Turtleman takes on The Big Apple

The verdict is out on whether or not "Today Show" host Matt Lauer is a Turtleman fan, but the rest of New York City thinks he's "snapperlicious."

"They love me here," Ernie Brown Jr., the Turtleman, said Thursday afternoon via telephone from The Big Apple. "People keep coming up to me wanting autographs, taking pictures. It's a big place up here."

  • Determination

De•ter•mi•na•tion (n): firm or fixed intention to achieve a desired end.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary's definition of "determination" is not a very good one, in my opinion.

I'd like to write my own definition(s), if I may.

Determination: A natural instinct to push oneself further, even if it's painful.

  • A reason to wink back

It's been a few weeks since the most recent drug court graduation was held in the 11th Circuit, which includes Marion County, but for those who completed the program, it was a significant event.

It was both a recognition and a reminder that they can and have been living their lives drug and alcohol free.

Bobby Burke Sr. of Lebanon is one of those graduates.

  • Volunteers needed for Warrior Dash

With more than 5,000 people already signed up to participate in the state's inaugural Warrior Dash, event organizers are looking for volunteers to help make the event run more smoothly.

The event will take place on Saturday, June 23, at Popes Creek Ranch in Lebanon.

Gravel Switch firefighter Larry Vaughn was flown to University Hospital in Louisville Saturday morning as a result of injuries in a motorcycle accident. He was listed in critical condition as of Tuesday morning.

Vaughn, 39, was riding westbound on a 2004 Honda motorcycle on E. Main Street in Lebanon when the collision occurred around 7:44 a.m. Vaughn was riding behind a 2005 Chevy Equinox driven by Sadie Luckett, 70, of Springfield.

Mayor Gary Crenshaw will deliver his annual budget address at the meeting.
