  • Bright ends basic training

    PFC Dylan Bright graduated basic training from Fort Jackson, S.C. on April 11, 2013 and will move on to AIT training at the same army base.
    Bright is a 2012 graduate of Marion County High School. While in high school he was a member of the Jr. ROTC for the entire four years. He will return to his studies and ROTC at Eastern Kentucky University when AIT training is complete.
    He is the son of Robert and Lisa Bright of Loretto. His grandparents are Viella and Anna Mattingly of Loretto and Sam and Donna Smothers of Lebanon.

    The Mets won the first game of the 2013 Marion County Little League program. Eden Kessler scored four runs and Maggie Overstreet pitched two innings of two-run softball and made a leaping catch of a line drive in the 2nd that was the turning point in the game.  For the Rays, Abby Jo Maupin and Alice Farmer each had two hits.

  • Divine signs with UK Track and Field

    Brooks Divine signed his national letter of intent on March 29, with the University of Kentucky track and field team. Brooks is pictured with his parents Steve and Lee Ann Divine, along with Marion County High School Athletic Director Robby Peterson, Coach James O’Hare, and Principal Stacey Hall.

  • Turkey hunting tests patience

    Wandering through the woods in half-light, just enough to see where you were going, but not enough to illuminate the cobwebs. No problem, they didn’t taste all that bad.
    Hit the call and get an answering gobble. Quick, set the decoys, pick a big tree to place the seat by and wait. Another gobble. This was too easy!
    Unfortunately, ya can’t eat gobbles, ya eat gobblers!
    Wait a while, rearrange the decoys, do a little calling and … nothing.
    Finally, even die hard turkey hunters call it a day.

  • Lady Knights opens district play with a pair of victories

    The Marion County Lady Knights softball team opened district play by  hosting Adair County April 8 and visiting Taylor County April 9. Marion County won both contests, to improve to 9-5 overall.
    “We had an excellent start to district play beginning 2-0,” Coach Todd Spalding said. “We have a big week ahead of us with two more district games and then Washington County. If we can sweep the district games this week we will be in an excellent position to win our second straight district championship.”

  • Knights win four of five

    The Marion County Knights baseball team had a great week, picking up four wins in five contests. The Knights defeated John Hardin, LaRue County, Taylor County and Elizabethtown, Their only loss came against Adair County.
    Marion County stands at 9-7 overall and 1-1 in the district.
    “This was the best week of the season we have had so far,” Coach Chad Spalding said.

  • Hit by pitch

    Recently, as I’m sure you’ve seen by now, there was a bench-clearing brawl that happened at a major league baseball game. The game was between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres.

  • Strong week for tennis teams

    The Knights and Lady Knights tennis teams each won all three matches they had last week.
    April 8 gainst Washington County, the Lady Knights and Knights both won 4-1. In girls’ play, Alyssa Farmer defeated Amelia Hilton 6-0, 6-1, Allie Evans defeated Erica Walker 6-0, 6-1, and Miranda Bradshaw defeated Rachael Cook 8-0 in singles play.
    In doubles action, Madison Cassidy and Elyssa Holt defeated Amelia Hilton and Erica Walker 6-0, 6-0, but Gabby Sims and Erika Weir defeated Rebecca Evans and Madeline Peterson 6-1, 6-1 for the Lady Knights only loss in the match.
