  • Students named to SCC dean’s and president’s lists

    St. Catharine College recently announced the list of students who have achieved extraordinary academic success for the Fall 2013 semester.
    The dean’s list includes all students who had a grade point average of 3.6 - 3.999.
    The following students from Marion County were recognized for their academic achievement: Sarah Blair, Cassie Clark, Emily Fenwick, Stuart Mattingly, Grace Mills, Martha Raley, Charles Ryan, Erin Sanders and Kendal Violette.

  • Five from Marion County graduate from Mid-Continent University

    Mid-Continent University recently held its December 2013 graduation ceremony. Five Marion County residents were among the graduates.
    Sara Elizabeth Ray of Lebanon graduated (cum laude) with a bachelor of science degree.
    Jessica Ann Calhoun, Janice Chesser (magna cum laude) and Dona Marie Owens, all of Lebanon, and Samantha Jo Tate of Gravel Switch graduated with an associate of science degree.

  • FFA members eligible for Monty’s Plant Food Company scholarships

    Monty’s Plant Food Company, a Louisville, Kentucky-based manufacturer of plant and soil enhancement products for the agriculture, industry, is now accepting applications for five, $1,000 college scholarships. The awards will be made in conjunction with the National FFA Organization to high school seniors who are members of FFA.
    To be eligible students must also meet criteria including:
    * Be a resident of Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Maryland, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Carolina, Tennessee or Virginia

    Stacy Thompson and Patrick Alvey of Loretto announce the birth of a 6-pound, 12-ounce daughter, Alivia Catherine Alvey, born Nov. 7, 2013, at Flaget Memorial Hospital, Bardstown.
    Maternal grandparents are Eddie and Sharon Thompson. Paternal grandparents are Jerry and Linda Newton and the late James Alvey.
    Alivia Catherine has three brothers, Dakota Smith and Cody and Ethan Alvey.

  • Independent Stave Company signs agreement to purchase Ohio Stave Company

    Independent Stave Company is pleased to announce its agreement to purchase the assets of Ohio Stave Company, slated to become the Boswell family’s fourth American oak stave mill. Ohio Stave Company will supply ISC’s Kentucky Cooperage, which primarily services the bourbon industry. The mill will also supply ISC’s subsidiary Stave Associates International, responsible for selling staves internationally to other cooperages.

  • Candidate filings for 2014 elections

    Candidates have until 4 p.m. Jan. 28 to file their nomination papers for the 2014 primary elections.
    Here are the candidates who have filed so far, according the Kentucky Secretary of State’s website. An (I) indicates the candidate is an incumbent.
    • U.S. Senate – Republicans: Matt Bevin of Louisville and Gurley L. Martin of Owensboro.
    While neither has officially filed, incumbent Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell and Democratic Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes have both been campaigning for Senate as well.
