  • Memorial Day - a day to be grateful to those who serve

    With most schools already out for the year and the sun not setting until well into the evening, it's understandable if many look to the upcoming three-day holiday weekend as the unofficial start of summer.

    Memorial Day is about much more than that, though.

    For nearly 150 years now, it has been a day of remembrance, a day to recall the sacrifice that so many gave for our nation.

  • Old phone is smart enough to make calls

    The first time I saw one of those strange little QR codes in an advertisement, I thought it was a mistake. It looked like a graphic artist had mangled a photo or barcode.

    Quick Response codes have been around since the mid-1990s but their popularity has increased since the introduction of "smartphones."

    They've even been showing up in ads in The LaRue County Herald News.

  • Balanced Senate postal reform bill is best solution

    Now that the U.S. Senate has passed bipartisan S 1789 to reform the ailing U.S. Postal Service, critics are trying to disable the bill on its way to the House. Both postal unions and USPS want more for their side, and some Republicans mistakenly believe the bill burdens taxpayers.

    Unfortunately, Kentucky Senators Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul both bought into that logic and opposed 1789.

    I'm a fan of the comic strip The Boondocks, and last week, I couldn't help but be reminded of a strip I read years ago.

    Granddad was talking to his grandsons. He thought they might have some questions in light of news reports about "gay marriage," and he wanted them to know how he felt.

    "First off," he tells the boys, "all marriage is wrong."

    Now before anyone gets upset, my parents have been married for close to 40 years, and I don't think they have done something wrong.

  • Just don't do it

    I was planning on writing about underage drinking after attending last week's town forum on the subject, but my mind is overcome with concern for a good friend, sorority sister and fellow runner who is laying in a hospital bed after being hit by a drunk driver Saturday evening.

    I can't stop thinking about her.

    You see, this friend of mine, she's one of the most amazing people I've ever met.

  • Economy is in recovery mode

    Earlier this year, as the General Assembly was putting together the budget to run state government, it was becoming increasingly clear that the state was finally beginning to see some lasting growth.

    That was further confirmed several weeks ago, when one of the state's economists said, "all signs are pointing to the likelihood that the recovery is here to stay."

  • Final look back at 2012 General Assembly

    Each legislative session is inevitably remembered for a key issue or two, and this year's will undoubtedly be recalled for the toughest budget most of us have seen in our lifetime and for taking a comprehensive approach on drug abuse.

    There were several other high-profile issues as well, including the legislature's latest effort to crack down on copper thefts and making sure that the interest on the sizeable federal loan for the state's unemployment insurance fund is covered so businesses wouldn't lose a much-needed tax credit.

  • Another man's treasure

    I'm sure that you've heard the old saying, "One man's junk is another man's treasure." Well, a case of that came up lately. An elderly gentleman who lived in the area began a collection that spanned nearly seven decades. After his health began to deteriorate, he became sick and passed away about two months ago. It was rumored that his collection existed, but those who had seen it told the story as fact.

    What was it this man had been collecting for more than 60 years?
