  • Letter: Tennis tournament benefits from tourist commission

    In light of a recent news article, I write to provide information about the Lebanon Tourist and Convention Commission's efforts in assisting the 2010 Farmers National Bank Heart of Kentucky Tennis Open. The FNB Heart of Kentucky Tennis Open has been a late summer annual event in Lebanon for the last five years. Lebanon is one of only eight cities that participates in the Central Kentucky Tennis Series competition. The Kentucky USTA named the CKTS as the 2010 community tennis association for the state.

  • Letter: Enjoyed holiday festival

    My husband and I had such a great time in Lebanon during the Heart of Kentucky Holiday Festival. Your tourism director, Chris Hamilton, and Christy Lee were so hospitable. We loved seeing the lights at Ruley's Santa Claus Land, Maker's Mark and bull riding at XB Arena! We can definitely say we had the small town Christmas experience!

  • Letter: Good job, Governor

    I applaud Governor Steve Beshear for stepping in and working with AK Steel and the Environmental Protection Agency in trying to resolve environmental violations at the Ashland coal plant. According to a Dec. 9 article in The (Ashland, Ky.) Independent, company representatives acknowledge problems at the plant and project $50 million to resolve these problems to the satisfaction of the EPA. I wish the governor and AK well, and hope that they will come to the reasonable solution they seek If they are successful, many good-paying jobs will be saved.

    Kudos to the Marion County EMS/Rescue Squad on Walnut Street for their efforts to keep Marion Countians safe while driving this holiday season. Their impossible-to-miss signs and the wrecked car in front of their station are great reminders of how to keep yourself and your loved ones safe during the holidays by remembering a few simple driving rules.  The signs plainly outline the ways to keep safe and make sure you have a ‘Happy Ever After’.

  • Letter: Make closing decision sooner

    Something happened last year that I didn’t like, and it seems to be happening again this year. I hope it changes as we do have snow coming. All the other schools are on the news at night saying no school. Our darned school person, whoever he/she is, is not putting our notices out until 6 a.m. on the day of no school! This is not fair to us grandparents or our grandchildren!

    The Lebanon Tourist & Convention Commission and its director, Chris Hamilton, made the second running of The Bourbon Chase a huge success. The experience in Lebanon was greatly enhanced over year one. I look forward to working with Lebanon to improve it even more in 2011.

  • Letter: We need a budget

    Here we are on the brink again with Congress leaving Washington D.C. for a month or longer recess an no budget written for the fiscal year and the lawmakers having to pass a standby bill to keep the government running while they are out in the country seeking re-election in November. Just the fellows we need returning! Well, we know that a lot of them are not returning to D.C. next year.
