Today's Opinions

  • Letters to the editor, Dec. 10

On behalf of the MCHS girls volleyball team, I would like to express our appreciation to Glen Richardson for his tireless efforts as athletic trainer at the high school. He spends an amazing number of hours advising and treating all the athletes at the school. To have this professional attention so available has made us the envy of most visiting teams who often make comments about Glen's contributions to the health and safety of our students.

  • To the victors

It's been a while since someone was able to beat the Lebanon Middle School girls basketball team.

No team has done it either of the last two seasons. To put it another way, the Lady Patriots have won 70 games in a row.

The LMS girls most recent victory occurred Friday at Rupp Arena in an overtime thriller. With their 40-33 win over Crosby Middle School, the Lady Patriots became back-to-back state champions.

  • The annual 'Airing of Grievances'

I got a lot of problems with you people! And now you're gonna hear about it! Frank Constanza, "Seinfeld", Dec. 18, 1997

The Christmas season is here, or should I say, the Christmas shopping season has arrived.

But that means something else just as important is on the horizon: Festivus.

  • Letters to the Editor, Dec. 3

Where did your freedom come from?

Some will say it is a gift from God, like the rights he gives you as natural, free citizens.

His 10 Commandments and Lord's Prayer have pointed you in the proper direction.

Apparently, it has taken many conflicts and wars to maintain our freedom.

On Dec. 7, 1941, at Pearl Harbor, America lost 4,522 dead, wounded and missing. American had time to retool for war then, but not now. It is a nuclear age.

  • Give thanks

Thanksgiving has always been one of my favorite holidays. It is a chance for us to gather with family and friends to reflect on the great blessings that we enjoy as Americans.

Of course, we have come a long way since the first Thanksgiving meal celebrated by the Pilgrims at Plymouth in 1621. They had very little food to eat and their shelters did not provide proper protection from the icy cold temperatures of their new homeland.

  • Letter: Great American Smokeout

Great American Smokeout 2008   Each year in November, Americans celebrate the American Cancer Society's Great American Smoke Out. This year will be the 33rd such annual event. The Great American Smoke Out is a designated day where smokers from across our nation unite in cause and commit to give up smoking for one day.

  • TIME TO ACT

The most recent Marion County Public Schools' district facilities plan identified Calvary and Lebanon elementary schools, Marion County High School and the Marion County Area Technology Center as the four buildings with the greatest need for construction and renovation.

Of those four, the Marion County Board of Education frequently spoke about Calvary Elementary and the tech center as the two top priorities.

  • Saving man's best friend

The sparkle in Ellie's eyes said it all when she, along with 46 of her furry friends, were loaded onto the PetSmart Charities' Rescue Waggin' at the Marion County Animal Shelter last week.

The big kiss she gave community service worker Scotty Johnson was also a clear indication of the puppy's excitement. And, in a way, that wet, soppy kiss was a big thank you.
