West Marion will be presenting its first “Mrs. Tammy Newton” scholarship in partnership with Angell Demmel Manufacturing. The school is proud to announce that they will award a scholarship of $1,000 based on a combination of academic achievement and community/school citizenship. The scholarship will be paid jointly to the student and school to be attended by the student. For a list of application procedures, see your school guidance counselor.

Industrial Foundation hears...

Marion County’s unemployment rate is 8 percent, according to the most recent figures, Karen King of the Marion County Economic Development Office reported at the May 16 Marion County Industrial Foundation Board meeting.
Board member John Turner added that the job market is good in our area. Several industries are hiring, but everyone is waiting to see the effects of the Affordable Health Care Act.
- The Marion County Industrial Foundation Board approved leasing land behind Joy Mining for $200 per acre to Phillip Kirkland for farming.

The big decision

Recently, a major decision in college basketball came down when the number one rated high school basketball player in the country made his college decision.  Andrew Wiggins from Huntington Prep picked the Kansas Jayhawks as his college team.  For weeks, many thought he would choose Kentucky and join the number one recruiting class in the nation.  If Wiggins had picked Kentucky, Coach John Calipari would have secured the number one player from each position in the ratings.
