Marion County wins middle school baseball conference

The Marion County middle school baseball team (21-4) won the mid-Kentucky middle school A division conference on May 29 in Bardstown.
Marion County won the championship with victories over Spencer County, LaRue County and Washington County.
As the top seed, Marion County received a first-round bye, then defeated Spencer County, 6-1, on May 24.
In the semifinals, Marion County edged out LaRue County, 10-9, to advance to the championship game. In the finals on May 29, Marion County picked up a 10-6 win over Washington County.

Lady Knights endured ups and downs during season

In a season that featured an eight-game winning streak and never more than a two-game losing streak, the Marion County Lady Knights’ softball season featured its share of ups and downs. Overall, the team finished the season with a record of 23-11, and was eliminated in the opening round of the regional tournament by Central Hardin with a 2-0 loss on May 27.  Central Hardin went on to win the regional tournament and advance to the state tournament, and the Lady Bruins did not allow a single run over the three-game regional.

400-mile yard sale is June 6-8

This year is the 10th anniversary of the 400 Mile Sale, and the route has expanded to be bigger than ever.
The 400 Mile Sale is taking place June 6-9 along U.S. 68, which runs right through Lebanon. The event will include miles and miles of yard, garage, and specialty sales as well as discounts at antique shops and boutiques across the state.

Thousands mourn fallen hero

Bardstown Police Officer Jason Ellis was remembered at his funeral Thursday as a man who loved life and liked to make people laugh.
In his eulogy for the young officer, who was murdered early Saturday morning, Police Chief Rick McCubbin told funny stories about Ellis, who would dress up in ridiculous costumes at office parties and play pranks on his fellow officers.

Support continues for fallen Bardstown officer

Three mayors and two police chiefs from four Hardin County cities traveled to Bardstown City Hall Friday, where they delivered donations to the reward fund for the arrest and conviction of the suspect in the May 25 shooting of Bardstown Police Officer Jason Ellis.
Kentucky State Police is heading the investigation and have received several tips, all of which they are following up on.

Divine brothers head to Junior Olympics regionals

High school track season may have ended, but competition continues for Brooks and Ty Divine. Both boys participated in the USATF (USA Track & Field) Kentucky Association meet on Saturday, June 1, at the Christian Academy of Louisville.
Ty competed in the “youth” division and Brooks in the “young men” division. Both boys met the qualifications to advance to the regional meet in Michigan in July. The results were as follows:

Board talks budget, tax rate

The Marion County Board of Education approved the 2013-14 tentative budget during a special called meeting last week. The $29.3 million budget includes a four percent tax rate increase. But, based on comments from several school board members, that rate increase isn’t necessarily going to fly with them this year.
“It just seems like every year we keep increasing and increasing and we keep getting cut and cut and it falls on the taxpayers of Marion County,” Board Vice Chairman Ed Hacker said.

Oklahoma twister is a reminder of tornado dangers

In the past month massive tornados have ripped through Oklahoma, and it’s been a little over a year since a tornado decimated West Liberty here in Kentucky.
These events serve as reminders of the dangers posed by these storms.
With that in mind, Marion County Emergency Management Director Hayden Johnson shared some tips for being safe before, during and after a tornado from the American Red Cross.
