‘Obamacare’ changes how health insurance will be provided

Jack Tillman wasn’t at the June 7 First Friday Forum to advocate for or against Obamacare, but he was there to try to help inform the audience about what it might mean for them.
Tillman is the vice president for member and group services for the Kentucky Health Cooperative, a non-profit insurance company that has been created in anticipation of the implementation of the requirements of the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.
He said it remains to be seen whether the changes will be good for the country.

Soapbox derby champion

Lawson Elder wins All American Soapbox Derby Championship in Louisville at the annual local race. Now he heads to Akron, Ohio for the National Championship race held in July. Lawson is the son of Chad and Karen Elder of Loretto.

Between sessions, legislative work continues

As you may know, the interim is in full swing with committees continuing to meet to study new issues and to review the progress of newly enacted laws. These committees are made up of both Senate and House members and are known as Interim Joint Committees. I chair the Veterans, Military Affairs, and Public Protection Committee and the Budget Review Subcommittee on Transportation. I serve on nine other committees and task forces that tackle issues ranging from to energy to education to health and welfare to economic development and tourism, among others.

Looking at agriculture and Kentucky’s economy

While it should surprise no one that agriculture is one of Kentucky’s biggest industries, we got a much clearer picture late last month of just how much of an impact it has on our economy.
According to the University of Kentucky’s College of Agriculture, the commonwealth’s farmers are the foundation for more than $46 billion in annual revenue.

Letter to the editor: Community supports the arts

The Marion County Heritage Center and the Lebanon Tourism Commission have been especially supportive of Kentucky Baroque Trumpets desire to bring the Arts to Lebanon and Marion County. KBT hosted a concert with two of the finest baroque trumpeters in the world and many businesses and individuals really supported  this concert.  St. Augustine Church provided the venue for our concert and Center Square provided a location for the master class and rehearsal space.

Friends in deed

On Sunday afternoon, Alex Thomas sat on a porch swing surrounded by family and friends. That wouldn’t seem noteworthy, except that a week earlier at that time, she was at Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville waiting to check out.
On May 25, Alex spent two to three minutes passed out and underwater, pinned by a Kubota rugged terrain vehicle. She was revived when friends Alyssa McRay, Cameron Goodin and Jacob Marples were able to push the RTV off her, and Jacob, administered CPR.
