Henry Howard “Cotton” Abell, 94, first started taking pictures when he was 10 years old. He won a kite-flying contest and the first prize was a box camera. He continued taking pictures until a few years ago due to macular degeneration. Cotton took most of the photos featured in Cotton’s Corner, but his first cousin, Bill Abell, also took some. Bill gave Cotton his slides when he moved to Louisville in the 1950s. Some of the photos in Cotton’s collection were also taken by Huley Browne. Browne’s widow, Violet, gave Cotton his slides after he passed away.

The Kentucky Cancer Program has created a photographic tribute to cancer survivors. The exhibit will be on display at the Marion County Public Library from June 21-30.
A reception is scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 21 to coincide with the opening of the exhibit. Inspirational stories about each survivor pictured are also part of the exhibit.

USDA Rural Development is scheduling a series of public information sessions across the state to provide information about loan and grant programs that are available to residents, business owners and community leaders in rural communities.

The 22nd Annual Old Mill Days is scheduled for Friday, June 10 through Sunday, June 12. The goal is a gymnasium and improvements for the community.

• 5 p.m., Flea market opens inside the park; t-shirts sales in the Civic Center and face painting at the big park pavilion

When a flood is over, victims must start the task of cleaning up their homes. First and foremost, consumers should check with their insurance company about policy coverage and specific filing requirements if anything gets damaged. About 15 years ago, a woman approached local writer Paul Jordan at the VFW hall in Lebanon about an interesting story.
She knew of Jordan’s history as a journalist - he had a distinguished career with the Associated Press before going into public service - and laid out the horrifying true details of her family life that eventually became “Descent to Sudden Death,” Jordan’s sixth book, which he signs 2-4 p.m. Saturday at Bardstown Booksellers.
